For the most accurate measurement, remove the faucet and handles from the sink. To get the faucet center, measure from the center of the hole in the sink on the far left to the center of the hole on the far right. Faucet center measurements can be anywhere between 4 and 16 inches.
In other words, measure from the centerpoint of the far left hole to the centerpoint of the far right hole. Most faucet centers range between 4 and 16 inches, with widespread faucets typically measuring at 6 to 8 inches and centerset faucets measuring at 4 inches.
Measure from the base of the tap, where it touches the sink, to its highest point. This could be on the spout if it's a U-shaped tap or on the top of the handle if it's an F-shaped tap.
Common connector sizes are typically 3/8-inch compression or 1/2-inch threaded fittings. Measure the distance from the shut-off valve to the faucet to determine the appropriate length of supply lines needed. Standard lengths range from 12 inches to 5 feet, but longer options are available if necessary.
How to measure the faucet threads size? Measure the diameter of the aerator. Measure the diameter of the male threads on the outside of the faucet.
Most faucets in the United States have a 1/2" MPT (male) or 1/2" FPT (female) threaded inlet.
For male pipe threads, be sure to measure the outside diameter at the widest point of the threads. For female pipe threads, measure the inside diameter at the widest point of the threads. You can then use these measurements to find the right size in a nominal pipe size conversion chart .
First, you need to determine the measurement of your stem—the stem is located within the pipe that is part of your faucet. Measure the overall stem length from brass tip to brass tip. This measurement will help determine the length of the hydrant you need based on manufacturing specifications.
Once you have the faucet out, count the holes and measure the distance apart. If there is only one hole in your sink you'll need a faucet designed with the handle as part of the faucet. If you have three holes but want a decorative set of water lines above the sink, select a “bridge faucet" that mixes the hot and cold.
Use a ruler to measure across the thread diameter where the connector would attach. Include all the thread in your measurement. Now you've got your tap thread measurement, you can easily work out which tap connector is compatible for your tap.
Take Measurements and Inspect
Measure the Cartridge: Use a ruler or caliper to measure the length, diameter, and other critical dimensions. Inspect for Identification: Look for any identifying numbers or markings on the cartridge itself. These can be very helpful in identifying the correct replacement.
Replacement tap valve size
This is determined by the thread which screws into the tap body. Happily there aren't too many variables in most domestic brassware. The most common conventions for domestic taps nowadays are 1/2" and 3/4" BSP.
Measure the Diameter of Existing Holes: For replacements, measure the diameter of the existing holes in your sink or bath. This ensures the new taps will fit without the need for additional drilling.
To find your faucet type, simply measure the distance between the center of the faucet handles. A distance of 4 inches between handles indicates the faucet is a centerset type. If the distance between handles is 8 to 16 inches, that falls into the widespread faucet category.

Threads are measured in threads per inch, or TPI. You simply count the number of thread peaks along a one-inch length. You'll also measure the major diameter of the screw, as shown above. These two measurements will combine to give you the screw size you need.
How do you measure pipe diameter? To find it, measure around the circumference of the pipe with flexible measuring tape. Divide the circumference by pi, or about 3.14159. For example, if the circumference is 12.57 inches (319 mm), you would divide by pi, and get an outside diameter of about 4 inches (100 mm).
What size thread should I get for fitting? Measure the inside diameter (ID) of the female thread and the outside diameter of the male thread (OD). This number will be used to figure out the size of the thread. To find the nominal size, count the threads on a fitting and look at the thread chart earlier in this guide.
