To achieve the best possible finish with water based
Generally for every 1 cup of paint I recommend adding 1 -- 2 tbsp of water. This will help the paint lay down smoothly and minimize brush strokes when painting furniture. The water essentially acts as an extender to improve the self-leveling characteristics of the paint.
A synthetic bristle paint brush is made of nylon, polyester or a mix of both and is perfect for use with water-based paints rather than solvent-based paints. It's hard-wearing bristles maintain their shape for an excellent smooth finish.
Or, you can use additives like Floetrol or Penetrol to extend the open time without sacrificing durability. Meaning, these additives specifically help with greatly reducing the brush and roller marks.
White China—These natural bristle brushes are best used with oil-based paints, especially enamels and varnishes. Ideal for woodwork, enamels, or marine applications, White China bristles virtually eliminate brush marks.
If you're painting a smooth surface, use a White China Bristle for a super-smooth finish. When painting a textured surface, a Black China Bristle will work best because it's slightly stiffer, more durable, and is excellent for high-productivity applications.
Once you've finished painting, it's now time to give your brushes and rollers a proper clean. First, scrape off as much paint as you can. If you've been using water-based paint, simply soak your brush or roller in warm water for about 2 hours. Dry with a clean cloth and store in a dry place for future use.

Walls, Wood, and Metal - Small 1/4″ roller covers or foam rollers will produce the smoothest finish. Light to Medium Textured Surfaces - Microfiber rollers are best.
Use this Flood Floetrol 1 qt. Clear Latex Paint Additive to improve the performance of latex and acrylic paints and reduce the appearance of brush marks. It allows latex paints to be sprayed with less pressure to help reduce tip clogging and piston freeze-ups.
As you likely know, there are two major types of paint: oil-based paint and water-based (latex) paint. While specific rules may vary a bit based on situation and surface (more on that later), you typically want to use two coats of paint regardless of whether you are using oil-based or water-based paint.

Without sanding, the new coat of paint might peel or cause an orange peel texture. Once sanded, clean the entire surface and scrub away any leftover dust, debris, or grime. Keep in mind that nothing gets smoother by adding more paint, it only gets smoother by sanding between coats.
Can you wash paint brushes in the sink? We wouldn't advise it. Between potentially clogging your plumbing system, exposing yourself to heavy fumes, and pouring flammable liquid down the drain, cleaning your brushes in the sink can be problematic. Instead, fill a clean, small container with the solvent.
Water Based Paints
Mix half a teaspoon of a clear, neutral pH, non-bleach dishwashing liquid with one cup of warm water. Apply it to the stain and leave for 5-10 minutes for best results. Rinse with warm water. You may have to rinse it several times to completely remove the residues.
You can use a thinner to make the paint flow more smoothly. Use a liner brush and clean up the edges of your stroke. Also, you can use a dry brush or another type of brush with a smaller tip to blend in your strokes.

Overall floetrol can be helpful if your working in extreme weather conditions with certain water borne paints. Â Floetrol can help reduce brush marks in your finish and make spraying your coating easier but proper directions should be followed when adding floetrol to a paint.
