The standpipe for the clothes washer must be trapped. The standpipe height should be at least 18 inches (457 mm) and no more than 42 inches above the trap weir.
❖ A standpipe is typically used for capturing the waste flow from a pumped discharge plumbing appliance such as a dishwasher or a clothes washer. An 18-inch (457 mm) minimum height standpipe provides a small volume for accumulation of waste flow above the entrance to the trap.
Also, the 18-inch minimum height of the standpipe intends to prevent the possibility of the clothes washer's pumped waste from overflowing the standpipe.
Older residential codes allowed for 1 ½” standpipes, but modern washing machines require a larger size. Your laundry standpipe must extend past your washer's overflow line, typically reaching a height of 30-36” or 18”-30” above the trap.
Water can siphon out of the machine if the end of the drain hose is too low. The machine won't necessarily be physically damaged ... but it can malfunction or generate a fault code if it's washing along and the water siphons out. It may not be able to fill if water is running in and siphoning out at the same time.
406.2Waste connection. The waste from an automatic clothes washer shall discharge through an air break into a standpipe in accordance with Section 802.4. 3 or into a laundry sink. The trap and fixture drain for an automatic clothes washer standpipe shall be not less than 2 inches (51 mm) in diameter.
The drain hose should be connected to the standpipe at the correct height for it to work properly. Ensure the highest point of the water drain hose is a minimum of 40cm and a maximum height of 100cm from the floor.
UPC 804.1 Standpipe Receptors.
No standpipe receptor for a clothes washer shall extend more than 30 inches (762 mm), or not less than 18 inches (457 mm) above its trap.

The standard washing machine drain size is 2 inches, and the minimum requirement is 1 1/2 inches. Modern washers typically require a larger drain, and you may need a larger drain if it's connected to your kitchen sink. Standpipes should be between 18 and 30 inches from the floor.
Discharge/drain hole (vertical): 16-20 inches from floor. Fixture (side to side buffer): 15 inches minimum from centerline, 20 inches recommended. Fixture (front buffer): 21 inches minimum to nearest obstruction, 30 inches recommended.
A dry drain trap, or p-trap, is key to your plumbing. It stops sewer gases from getting into your home by keeping a bit of water. If the trap dries out, it lets bad smells back into your laundry room. To fix this, just pour a quart of water down the drain to refill it and seal it again.
A standpipe is a rigid type of piping, which serves as a connection to the water supply. It is usually installed in a vertical position and it essentially works as a fire hydrant.
1Height. In other than Group R-3 and R-3.1 occupancies, Class III standpipe systems shall be installed throughout at each floor where any of the following occur: 1. Buildings where the floor level of the highest story is located more than 30 feet (9144 mm) above the lowest level of fire department vehicle access.
The standard height for a washer box is between 42 and 48 inches from the floor.
Class I systems are designed for use by fire departments with 2½” hose connections. Class II systems are designed for use by trained personnel or fire departments with 1½” hose connections. Class III systems are designed for use by trained personnel or fire departments with both 1½” and 2½” hose connections.
Standpipes that are part of a combined system in a building that is partially sprinklered shall be at least 6 in. (150 mm) in size. Where the building is protected throughout by an approved automatic sprinkler system in accordance with NFPA 13 or NFPA 13R, the minimum standpipe size shall be 4 in.

The ideal slope of any drain line is ¼ inch per foot of pipe. In other words, for every foot the pipe travels horizontally, it should be dropping ¼ inch vertically. Many drains either have too little slope or too much slope. That's right, it is possible to have too much slope in your drain lines.
The vertical distance from the fixture outlet to the trap weir shall not exceed 24 inches (610 mm), and the horizontal distance shall not exceed 30 inches (762 mm) measured from the centerline of the fixture outlet to the centerline of the inlet of the trap.
Standard pipe size for kitchen sinks: The Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) states that kitchen sinks should have a drain pipe of at least 1.5 inches in diameter, but 2 inches is commonly used to handle higher water volume and waste.
The drain pipe should be a minimum of 1-1/2" I.D. (inside diameter) to ensure proper draining. The Washer drain hose is a 1-1/4" O.D. (outside diameter). To be confident that no siphoning of water will take place, the drain plumbing must be a minimum of 30" high for Top Load Washers.
Ideally you should extend the plumbing to the appliance, for both water supply and drain waste. But if absolutely necessary you can extend your waste drain hose to a maximum of three (3) metres, providing the use of the correct bore size, type, and quality of hose, and suitable joining pieces are employed.
Your legal obligation is to ensure that any waste pipe you attach to the drain hose includes a P trap with a U bend between your sink or appliance and the mains drain. This is to prevent foul smells from coming from the drain into your home.
