The standard space between the countertop and upper cabinets is around 18 inches. This measurement allows for convenient use of countertop appliances and provides ample space for food preparation.
Distance Between the Worktop and Wall Units
If you follow the best practices for designing your kitchen, you should allow for at least 400mm (40cm) clearance between the worktop surface and the bottom of the wall units, leaving enough space on the worktop for keeping small appliances.
Standard countertop overhang is 1 ½ inches.
Keep in mind that this is 1 ½ inches over the front edge of the base cabinet. While some countertops may have different overhang measurements, this is the number that is seen as standard for homes.
The distance between the base cabinet (including kitchen countertops) and wall cabinet is normally between 18 and 20 inches. The height of standard kitchen cabinetry is 2070mm that can be 5mm plus or minus. This covers the space between the benchtop and the bottom of the wall cabinets – 450mm. Standard wall cabinets are 720mm high and floor cabinets are generally 720mm high.
It's not necessary that the kitchen cabinets have to touch the ceiling. It's completely dependable on your choice. So do you prefer the smooth, continuous appearance provided by cabinets that extend all the way to the ceiling? Some people prefer the look of a continuous wall cabinet with no space above it.
That depends on the squareness and level of the wall. If the wall is perfect and true level, the cabinets will be flush fit. Most walls are wonky however, so that means a cabinet will drift out off the wall. So that means shimming and adjusting for level with trims to hide imperfections.
Leave a space between the cabinet and wall as recommended by the cabinet manufacturer. Shim beneath the cabinet to align it with the top-of-cabinet line you drew on the wall. When determing how to install base cabinets on uneven floors, check for level and plumb, and add shims until the cabinets are at the same level.
There are no building codes that establish a standard upper cabinet height. The prevailing “standard” among kitchen remodelers is 54 inches from the floor to the cabinet's bottom edge. That leaves an 18-inch space between the countertops and the upper cabinets.
Since countertops sit directly on the cabinets, the cabinetry must be installed prior to the final measurements, fabrication, and installation. If an apron or farmhouse sink is being used, it must be installed prior to template process.
Granite Thickness and Overhangs

Kitchen island clearance is important because some kitchens may not be large enough to have an island. The recommendation is to have a distance of 42 inches to 48 inches between the perimeter countertops and the kitchen island.
Guidelines recommend a minimum of 12” landing area on one side of a cooking surface, and 15” on the other side. In a peninsula or island situation, it is also recommended to have 9” of countertop behind the cooking surface if the countertop height is the same height as the surface cooking appliance.
Ideally, a fully functioning countertop can be flush with the cabinets. An ideal measurement must be followed before doing so – the handle of the cabinets must be between 1” and 2” from the kitchen countertop overhang. The primary purpose here must be the functionality of the cabinets and saving space.

Generally, upper cabinets are mounted with the bottom edge being 54-inches above the floor. That means if you have 8-foot ceilings, your upper cabinets would be 42-inches tall, while a 9-foot ceiling has 54 inches available.
It's only necessary to have the cabinets themselves level. With lots of shims, this can be done over an uneven floor or against a wall that is out of plumb.
Also, you could use 12” cabinets above the 42” ones and then fill the gaps with crown moldings or other decorative work. → For 10-foot-tall ceilings, the best option would be to have cabinetry makers build the custom cabinets to fit the space perfectly.
