Generally, allocate 24 inches of space per person on the table. 4-seater: Requires about 36-48 inches in length for a rectangular or square table, or 36-48 inches in diameter for a round table.
Most rectangular tables are between 36" and 40" wide. A table that seats four should be about 48" long. To seat four to six people, look for a table that is at least 60" long. For six to eight guests, your table should be at least 78" long.

Standard width measurements for dining tables typically range between 28 inches (71 cm) to 40 inches (102 cm).
We recommend at least three feet (36 inches) clearance around all sides of your table. This allows enough room to walk behind chairs or to open nearby cabinet doors.
We recommended allowing 36 inches or more between the edge of your table and the wall or other furniture. This leaves room for someone to walk behind the chairs while others are seated. Make sure there is enough room to pull chairs out from the table.
A 12x12 bedroom is a space that measures 144 square feet. This size is quite popular for residential bedrooms, offering enough room for essential furniture while still feeling cozy. In a 12x12 bedroom, you can typically fit a queen-sized bed, a nightstand on each side, and a dresser without feeling cramped.
How narrow can a dining room table be? The minimum comfortable width for a dining room table, accommodating at least two people, their plates, cutlery, and glassware, is 30 inches.
A 4 ft. square banquet table can comfortably seat 4-6 guests, while the 5 ft table sits 8, and the 6 ft. square banquet table can comfortably sit 10.
Small sizes. The smaller circular table sizes, between 60 cm and 90 cm wide, are great for small households. 60 cm and 70 cm tables are usually only suitable for two, but tables with a diameter of 90 cm can usually seat four without taking up a large amount of room.
A 42" to 48" diameter round dining table can be used by up to four adults. A 54" diameter table can seat up to five adults. A 60" diameter can accommodate up to six adults. A 72" diameter is good for up to eight adults.
Four-top. A four-top accommodates three to four people, with one plate and one drink per person. They are either round or square and 30 inches in diameter or length/width (square). A more formal service for four people would mean your four-top should be 36 inches round; or, if square, 34×34 inches or 30×48 inches.
What is standard height dining? Standard height dining tables, sometimes called regular height dining tables, sit between 28 and 30 inches and should be used with 18 to 23 inch chairs, stools or benches.
A four-person square dining table should be at least 36 x 36 inches, but 40 or 44 inches is preferred. The table should be up to 50 inches wide to make it comfortable. A rectangular table with a minimum size of 48 x 36 inches, although we could extend it if we eventually need to seat two more people at the head.
A 72” - 84” long rectangular table can seat up to 10 adults, depending on table width. A 96” - 108” long rectangular table can seat up to 12 adults, depending on table width. A 120” long rectangular table can seat up to 14 adults, depending on table width.
Allow room for 3' of clearance on each side of the table. That's the amount of space you need to pull out chairs from the table, or to walk behind people seated at the table. Take other furniture into account. So if you have a buffet or bar cart against the wall, measure 3' out from that piece of furniture.
They seat you close in a restaurant because it allows the waiter to service both tables efficiently; instead of running from one end of the place to the other.
Guest Space
The spacing of all of these items matter. The typical formal place setting requires about 15” per guests to allow enough elbow room at the table. The actual plate should be 1” from the edge of the table, and the bottom of all the utensils should line up with the plate bottom.
