Guidelines recommend 15” of space on either one or both sides of an oven, or if the oven is in a tall cabinet and this is not possible, to have 15” of landing space no more than 48” in front of the oven as long as it does not open into the main walkway.
Installations can vary, so checking the installation instructions to determine space requirements for your specific model is recommended. The following are general minimum clearances for ranges: 1 ½ inches to nearest adjacent sidewall above the cooktop on both sides. 30 inches between the cooktop and a cabinet.
There is usually around a 2.5mm gap on each side of the range for the cabinetry. Depending on the model and the cabinet makers, some may require a larger gap (up to 10mm) to protect the cabinetry from heat damage.
Ideally, you have countertop space on both sides of the stove, although you may not have a lot of options in a small kitchen. At the very least, you should have enough counter space beside the oven so that you can put down a heavy turkey or roast after you've pulled it out of the oven.
A minimum clearance of 36 inches from the top of the stove to the ceiling or any combustible materials above it. Hearth Requirements: The hearth should extend at least 18 inches in front of the loading door and 8 inches on each side of the stove.

Ranges. Electric Ranges require 0" side wall clearance above the counter height but up to 6" is recommended to avoid possible heat damage to surrounding surfaces.
For safety and efficiency, allow adequate bench space for preparation (80-140cem between sink and hotplates, 30cm at each side of the cooktop) and serving (300mm for two plates, double for four), and at least 450mm set down next to the fridge, pantry and wall oven. The recommended counter depth is 600mm.
Stove dimensions can vary between the stove size itself and the cutout measurements. For example, a 30-inch stove may actually measure at 29⅞ inches wide, but it will require a 30-inch cutout for installation. It's important to check the exact specifications of each stove to make sure it will fit your available space.
Stove: gas or electric
Make sure you have a 30” clearance between the cooking surface of an electric stove and the bottom of your upper cabinet and a 36” clearance for a gas stove. This means that the bottom of the cabinet with the range hood should be 66" to 72" from the finished floor.
Modern range cookers are very well insulated so do not need a large gap at the side of them, unless perhaps you want to position your cooker next to a refrigerator or a wine cooler.
Without a backguard, a stove or range should typically be installed at least 6 inches away from a combustible back wall surface, like drywall. With a backguard, the range can usually be installed with zero wall clearance.
Side-by-side double ovens can be a unique option for those with wider kitchen layouts. This setup positions two ovens horizontally, rather than stacking them vertically, and often features in custom kitchens.
Many installers may recommend a distance of 3-6 inches of space being the minimum. However, we always recommend increasing that to around nine inches of open space. The key here is to make this decision with the safety of the occupants in mind.
Firstly, the minimum space allowed between the cooktop elements or gas burners and combustible materials directly overhead is 600 mm. Secondly, there must be at least 50 mm clearance from the back edge of the cooktop to a non-combustible wall surface or splashback.
How Much Space Do You Need for a 30-Inch Stove? A 30-inch (76.2 cm) stove needs at least 31 inches (78.7 cm). This means half an inch on both sides. While fitting the stove snuggly may sound like a great idea, it is not practical.
Most standard stoves are 30 inches wide, around 25-27 inches deep (excluding handles and knobs) and 36 inches tall (excluding control panels). These standard stove sizes are designed to fit standard cabinet cutouts that are 34-1/4 inches wide, 24 inches deep and 36 inches tall.
A 30-inch wall oven may require a cabinet size that's approximately 33 inches wide. A general rule of thumb is to add an extra 3 inches wider than the wall oven. For instance, with a 27-inch wall oven, you'll want around a 30-inch cabinet size.
It is possible to replace a 30" cooktop with a 36" model if you have the space for it in your kitchen. If the cabinet that holds your old cooktop is 32" or smaller, you will have to do some remodeling of your cabinetry to make room for a larger appliance.
Space around your hob
As well as the space you'll need for the hob itself, you also need to leave yourself a minimum of 300mm either side (500mm would be better) this allows plenty of space for your pan handles – so no one knocks them off as they walk around your island.
The National Kitchen and Bath Association recommends a distance of at least 36 inches (but no more than 48 inches) between the center of the sink and the center of the stove hob.
A minimum 2" clearance to combustibles is required below the cooktop. The bottom of the cooktop may get warm while in use but should not be hot.
Just remember to leave enough clearance from the hob to the extractor. The recommended safe distance is 650mm for electric, ceramic or induction hobs and 750mm for gas hobs. Using wall units above your range cooker could be a little tricky though.
