Gutter hangers should always be placed at least every three feet for proper support (2 feet in northern climates where snow and ice can add additional weight on the gutters).
As a rule of thumb, gutter hangers should be spaced a maximum of three feet away from each other. If you live in a cold climate, your contractor may recommend gutter hanger spacing of two feet apart to account for the additional weight from snow and ice.

Bottom line is that the fascia just needs to slip behind the drip edge and not catch water. I would be comfortable with a minimum of 1/4'' but more is better. Your gutter will also slip behind the drip edge, so that will also provide coverage even if the fascia cover doesn't quite reach.

Hanger Spacing
If you live in a warm area with less rain, then you should install your gutter hangers near the middle of the gutter every 24 inches or where there is a rafter. For rainy or snowy climates, you should install the gutter hangers closer together, no more than 18 inches apart.
Common practice is to install suitable hangers within two feet (2 ft) of each side of a pipe joint; changes in direction should be supported as close as possible to the fitting to reduce tensional stress.

Roof rafters shall be spaced either 16 inches or 24 inches apart (on-center (o.c.).
Your new gutters should be installed at a certain angle to ensure rainwater is diverted to the drains. As a rule of thumb, gutters should have a slope of 1/4 inch for every 10 feet.
Vinyl gutters are usually cheaper from a materials standpoint, but they don't last as long and they take longer to install. Aluminum gutter materials cost is a little more, but they are easier to find, will last longer, and are more efficiently installed.

The general rule is that there needs to be a downspout for every 40 feet of the gutter. If you follow this rule, you'll make sure that no downspout is taking in too much water. You'll also ensure that no part of the gutter is keeping too much water at any moment.
If you live in a predominantly warm place with occasional rainfall, your gutter hangers should be close to the center of the gutter system. The spacing should be no more than 36 inches apart from the center. For wet climates, gutters should have a maximum distance of 18 inches between them.

If you're using a heavy duty gutter material you might be able to pull off a four foot gap.. As a general rule, gutter brackets should be no more than 30 inches apart although there may be exceptions such as really high quality steel or aluminum.
