Typically, dining tables are 36” to 40” wide. Leave at least 30” between the wall and the table. A simple rule of thumb is to measure your room's length and width and subtract 6 from each of the measurements. For example, if your room is 12' x 10', then the perfect table is 6' x 4'.
We recommend at least three feet (36 inches) clearance around all sides of your table. This allows enough room to walk behind chairs or to open nearby cabinet doors.
Leave 52” between rectangle tables. That allows for 2×18” for chairs and 16” between the chairs. Round tables with chairs and service aisle. Leave 60” between round tables.
Rectangular or Square Spaces
If the space in question is rectangular, the most suitable option will probably be a Rectangular Table or an Oval Table; if the space is square, the most suitable option will probably be a Square Table or a Round Table.
Round tables
If you are looking for something that on the whole takes up less space, then a round table is ideal. The aesthetic of a round dining room table not only gives the illusion of more space, but the softer, less angular lines give a more flowing, fluid look.
Choose one for a minimalist flourish, or three for a lush, full presentation on a round table or dot them down the length of a long, rectangular table. They pair well with petite arrangements and bud vases, too!
We recommended allowing 36 inches or more between the edge of your table and the wall or other furniture. This leaves room for someone to walk behind the chairs while others are seated. Make sure there is enough room to pull chairs out from the table.
Rectangular and oval tables:
For a small size rectangle, the standard is 30” or 36” wide by 48” long. Small rectangle tables seat 4 people comfortably. These sizes sometimes have leaves that expand the table to 60” long or more which can sit 6 people easily. The most common rectangular size is 42” wide by 60” long.
Efficient Use of Space: Round tables often have a smaller footprint compared to rectangular or square tables of similar seating capacity. This space efficiency makes them ideal for smaller dining areas, as they maximize the usable space in the room.
A 72” - 84” long rectangular table can seat up to 10 adults, depending on table width. A 96” - 108” long rectangular table can seat up to 12 adults, depending on table width. A 120” long rectangular table can seat up to 14 adults, depending on table width.
Here is a breakdown of common dining table width categories: Narrow Tables (28-32 inches / 71-81 cm): Ideal for small dining spaces or breakfast nooks, narrow tables maximize seating while conserving space.
Optimum individual place settings have an overall width of 30” (76 cm) and total depth of 27” (69 cm) that is split between an 18” (46 cm) place setting and a 9” (23 cm) shared zone. What is the ideal placement for a dining table in a room?
How Many People Can Sit at a 8 Foot Table? For an 8 foot, or 30 inch by 96 inch rectangular table, you can comfortably sit 8-10 people, with 4 chairs on either side and 1 chair at either end.
Rectangular is the most common table shape, and the dimensions vary depending on how many people you'd like to seat. Most rectangular tables are between 36" and 40" wide. A table that seats four should be about 48" long. To seat four to six people, look for a table that is at least 60" long.
Round dining tables should have a diameter of at least 54 to 60 inches. Rectangular dining tables should have a width of 36 to 42 inches.
Allow room for 3' of clearance on each side of the table. That's the amount of space you need to pull out chairs from the table, or to walk behind people seated at the table. Take other furniture into account. So if you have a buffet or bar cart against the wall, measure 3' out from that piece of furniture.
The minimum comfortable width for a dining room table, accommodating at least two people, their plates, cutlery, and glassware, is 30 inches. However, it doesn't leave much space for serving dishes and other table items.
For a 6-seater dining table, you would generally need a space of at least 8 feet by 10 feet to accommodate the table and chairs comfortably. This allows for enough space for people to move around and pull out chairs without feeling cramped.
Left-align the information in the leftmost column or stub column of the table body (but center the heading). In general, center information in all other cells of the table. However, left-align the information if doing so would improve readability, particularly when cells contain lots of text.
So, if you are looking for square dining room layout dimensions, a 12 ft x 12 ft space is good enough to create a comfortable dining space. Choose furniture with legs to make your space look spacious and clutter-free.
As a general guideline, you'll want to keep your tall pieces at 24” or higher and your short pieces at 12” or under. Some clients are hesitant about using tall centerpieces. If your client decides to nix the talls, you'll need to adjust your decor accordingly. You don't want the space to feel lackluster!
72 inch round tables seat 10-12 guests comfortably. Like the 60 inch rounds, tall and short centerpieces are appropriate for this size table, however, we don't recommend super petite arrangements. It's best to keep the diameter of your container to at least 5.5-6inches to ensure a full arrangement.
