We highly recommend using a positive overhang for your undermount sink when purchasing a new countertop. It provides you with the best appearance and drainage.
A zero reveal is a counter that is flush with the sink's rim. This is the most stylish and practical reveal for an undermount sink. It's free from cracks and crevices where debris can get stuck, making your sink very easy to clean. And, it will add high-end appeal to your home.
The limiting factor on how close to the edge the sink cutout can be is almost always the risk of cracking the rail during fabrication, transport, or installation. A general rule of thumb is 4" for a typical 2 bowl kitchen sink and 3-1/2" for a vanity sink.
That distance, the “overhang” of the counter, is the dimension you will want to specify as a design consideration. Our customers often ask us for a recommended dimension for the counter overhang. The short answer is 1”-2”, based on your design preference.
Standard countertop overhang is 1 ½ inches.
Keep in mind that this is 1 ½ inches over the front edge of the base cabinet. While some countertops may have different overhang measurements, this is the number that is seen as standard for homes. While 1 ½ inches is the most common, it's far from mandatory.
The maximum overhang is no more than 1/3 of the total dimension of the countertop – not to exceed 15”. Overhang greater than 15” requires corbels or flush mounted steel supports. Supports must be designed to bear the weight of the countertop and be mounted to studs or equivalent load bearing structure.
The undermount sink measures about 20 inches overall, with a rim of 1 inch. Remember, this rim is underneath the countertop, so it does not take up countertop space. If a 1-inch buffer of counter space is left in front of the sink, 3 inches more is available behind it to mount the faucet.
Measure and Mark the Kitchen Sink's Layout
If sink has a template, align it with the mark on the counter. Place its back edge 1½ inches from and parallel to the counter.
As a general rule of thumb, you will want at least a 1/2" of clearance on both sides between the lip of the sink and the inside walls of the cabinet (1/4" is tight, but doable!).
Marble and granite

Think about your work areas.
The sink, main refrigerator, and stove should be in close proximity to each other. You require a minimum of 4 feet between each point to easily maneuver, and equally not more than 9 feet.

To determine the maximum sink size for your base cabinet, measure the interior of your cabinet and subtract two to three inches from each dimension. A 36″ base cabinet can handle a 33″ sink at most; a 30″ cabinet should be fitted with a sink no larger than 27″ wide.
