We normally go ⅜ inch inside the sink for the overhang, but this can be flexed for the look you desire.
Most farmhouse sinks stick out past the face of the cabinets from . 75 of an inch to as many as 2 inches. Take a look at nearby drawers prior to ordering your sink to ensure that you will have clearance when the drawer is extended.
For the recommended under-mount installation, the sink needs to sit slightly under the countertop. Verify the measurement from the top of the cabinet to the bottom of the sink opening is greater than the height of the opening.
That distance, the “overhang” of the counter, is the dimension you will want to specify as a design consideration. Our customers often ask us for a recommended dimension for the counter overhang. The short answer is 1”-2”, based on your design preference.

It is recommended that your base cabinet be 3 inches larger than the size of the farmhouse sink you are considering to install.
Which means you CAN fit some "thirty" inch sinks in a 30" kitchen sink base cabinet. However, definitely take a look at each sink's specifications to make sure it will fit in your cabinet. A sink with a basin dimension that is close or the same as your inside cabinet dimension will be a tight fit.
OVERHANG - The countertop extends over the edge of the sink on all sides by approximately 1/8" - 1/4". Use caution with this installation to be sure that accessories such as colanders or cutting boards will fit properly. REVEAL - The countertop edge sits approximately 1/8" - 1/4" back from the edgeof the sink rim.
1. Purpose. If the counter is to be used for food prep, the standard measurement for the overhang is 1-1/2 inches. This is long enough to provide some protection for your cabinets without forming an obstruction.
Standard countertop overhang is 1 ½ inches.
Keep in mind that this is 1 ½ inches over the front edge of the base cabinet. While some countertops may have different overhang measurements, this is the number that is seen as standard for homes.
However, there are some key differences between the two types of sinks. Apron sinks are generally smaller than farmhouse sinks. Kohler makes farmhouse sinks with smaller aprons to keep the same aesthetic in a more manageable size for some cabinets. In most new homes the kitchen sink is approximately 30 inches in length, which is a standard size for a farmhouse sink. The other standard sizes are 24, 33, and 36 inches.
Once the farmhouse under-mount sink is set, it's time to install the countertops above. For this step, professional help is recommended; you'll need to have precise measurements of the sink's dimensions, as the countertop might need to be adjusted and cut to fit in perfectly.
SUPPORT IS NECESSARY
You will need to set aside some budget to properly secure and support your farmhouse sink, as added support is typically required beneath. There are many ways to do this, and this is typically advised from the provided sink specifications that come with your new apron sink.
Since countertops sit directly on the cabinets, the cabinetry must be installed prior to the final measurements, fabrication, and installation. If an apron or farmhouse sink is being used, it must be installed prior to template process.
A typical overhang for a comfortable seating area should be around 25-30cm (10-12”), this should leave enough knee room and adequate space between the countertop edge and the person seated.
The maximum overhang is no more than 1/3 of the total dimension of the countertop – not to exceed 15”. Overhang greater than 15” requires corbels or flush mounted steel supports. Supports must be designed to bear the weight of the countertop and be mounted to studs or equivalent load bearing structure.
Even so, having said all that, there are plenty of reasons farmhouse sinks will never go out of style. As George pointed out, “they are extremely versatile” and as long as you're careful and “you keep on top of cleaning, your sink will remain in good quality for years to come.”
Modern farmhouse sinks
Farmhouse sinks have been huge in recent years, and it seems the trend is not going anywhere. A practical choice for family homes, this style of sink is hugely versatile, and is a feature in many modern farmhouse kitchens...and those that have brought the rustic look to the city.
When selecting, or designing, a base cabinet for your new farmhouse sink, it is important that the size of the base cabinet is correct. Your base cabinet should measure 3" longer in length than the sink you are installing. For example, if you have a base cabinet that measures 36" wide it will support a 33" sink.
To make space for the extra-large sink, you'll need an 'apron-skirt' cabinet design. A farmhouse sink can't fit into the usual drop-in sink space and extends over the top quarter of the lower cabinet. This requires a full re-design of the cabinet and countertop where your farmhouse sink is installed.
A farmhouse sink needs supports attached to the inside of the cabinet because it's heavy. Some can weigh over 300 pounds when filled with water. The top of the sink needs to be even with the cabinets so the counter will sit correctly.
