The overlap, which is 2" for each panel, ensures privacy and light control. One-way panels do not overlap. The PLEAT-TO is the finished width of a drapery, or the total width a drapery is “pleated to” including its returns and overlaps.
How wide should curtains be? To ensure that curtain panels look ample when closed, they should have a combined width that is 2 to 2.5 times the width of the window/rod. That means if you are ordering Grommet style or Rod-pocket style, the total drapery width should be at least 2 times the window/rod widths.
The measurement should be the length of the pole excluding the finials. Don't forget to allow for the fabric to overlap - this is an additional measurement, normally 2.5cm that allows the hanging curtains to overlap in the middle when they are closed.
You can use two or more separate rods to layer your curtains. This choice will allow you to hang one layer higher than the other if desired or increase the depth between layers. Utilizing multiple rods is particularly helpful if you want to use three of four different layers over your window.
To achieve this look, slide one panel of the main curtains onto the rod. Move it to the very end to create space for additional panels. After that, add one or two of the sheer panel on to the rod. The number you add depends on your taste.
It depends on factors such as window length, but more often than not, curtains look best when touching the floor. However, how low you want your curtains to hang will determine what you want to achieve. In reality, different decorating styles employ varying curtain lengths.
For curtain tracks you will need to insert the hooks into the low or middle row of pockets so that the heading hides the track. For poles insert the hooks into the top row of pockets so that the curtain hangs below the pole. Just make sure you insert the hooks into the pockets rather than onto the cords!
How to tie curtains: Wrap the tieback around each curtain. Pull the curtain back and secure the tieback to the hook on the wall, making sure the curtain covers it. Adjust the curtain above the tieback to achieve a straight or more drapey look.
As a general rule, drapes will be open during the day, so make sure the curtain rod extends at least four inches on each side of the window's inside frame. To create the illusion of a wider window, extend the rod up to 10 inches beyond the window's frame.
There's a simple calculation to work out how much curtain fabric you need. First, multiply the track/pole width by your chosen fullness (eg. Pole width 150cm x 2.5 = 375). Next, divide that figure by the fabric width, which is typically 137cm (375 divided by 137 = 2.73).
For a 120-inch window, how wide should curtains be? Depending on the weight of the fabric and how much you want the curtains to be. At least a width and a half is what I would recommend. 180 inches is the width of each curtain.
The proper position is ½ inch above the floor for free hanging curtains. This distance allows for mopping and cleaning while creating the illusion that the curtain touches the floor.
Example: If your window measures 36" wide (window width x 2 = 72"), you need curtains that will give a minimum width of 72" or 2 panels for that window. In this case 2 panels will give about 100" to 120" of width which will look nice and full. Always round up to the next full number.
If you have the space between the top of your window frame and the ceiling or crown molding, though, you should hang the rod over the window. I like to go 3 to 5 inches down from the ceiling. Doing this visually extends the length of your wall, making your ceiling look higher.
Curtain tracks are made from either plastic or metal and are used to hang and draw curtains that have heading tape. You can't use eyelet curtains or tab top curtains with a curtain track.
Can any curtain be fitted to a track? Curtains with a pencil pleat, pinch pleat or wave header style can be fitted to a curtain track. However, eyelet curtains can only be fitted to a curtain pole. This is because the round eyelets need a curved surface to glide smoothly across.
Pencil pleat curtains can be hung from a track or a pole. Tab top and Eyelet curtains must be hung from a pole. Pinch and Goblet pleat curtains can be hung from a track or pole but as they hang underneath either, to enable the curtains to concertina back properly, the track or pole will be in full view.
Making Your Room Look Larger or Smaller with Curtains
High-hanging curtains with long vertical stripes create the illusion of height, which is excellent for low ceilings. However, short curtains and horizontal stripes shorten your wall height and make the room appear smaller.
Place the curtain panels on top of one another, right sides together. Then pin the vertical edges you unpicked together. If your fabric is quite thick you may opt to clip the two panels together instead. If you're working with patterned panels check that the pattern matches before and after pinning.
Although very similar in design to single curtain rods, a double curtain rod allows you to layer more than one drapery panel or curtain for a more enhanced and dramatic look. Most typically, people layer a sheer curtain first and then a regular curtain on top to block out light.
For example, sheers hung beneath another curtain should always be at least one inch shorter than the top curtain.
How Wide Should Curtains Be For A 100-Inch Window? The average curtain bought to hang on a 100-inch window should measure between 200 and 250 inches wide. To achieve appropriate fullness with thinner material, get curtains upward of 300 inches wide. For decorative purposes, you can go 150 inches in width.
