The minimum required clearance is 12”, it can be more, but not less than 12”. Accurately measure the head clearance from the header opening to the ceiling or any vertical incumbrances, like ferdowns or ledges. For doors up to 10' tall the minimum head clearance is 16”.
Six-foot rollup doors need at least 16 inches of headroom, while a 20-foot stainless-steel door requires 25 inches of vertical headroom. Extreme® 300 Series: Doors in the Extreme® 300 Series can be 6 feet to 20 feet tall, requiring either 15 or 19 inches, depending on whether the door is 6 feet or 20 feet.
Typically, you will need 300mm (205mm for a compact door) of headroom for an insulated roller garage door and 450mm for a single skin steel shutter or door. If you do not have this much space available then let the Royal Industrial Doors team know and we'll see what we can do.
A standard, 7.5-foot, manually operated commercial roll up door needs at least fifteen inches of headroom. If the door has an automatic opener, it will require at least eighteen inches. Roll up doors also require a small amount of horizontal headroom, though nowhere near as much as sectional or overhead doors.
For the aluminium double skinned type roller door using a 77mm slat with a depth of 19mm (general size used) the headroom required is 300mm minimum in order to get almost the full height as ordered.
You'll want a minimum of 15 inches of overhead clearance for a standard garage door with an electric opener. This translates to 12 inches for the door and torsion spring system and 3 inches for the garage door opener equipment.
When deciding on the type of door to fit your garage, it's best to keep in mind that a roller garage door will encroach on around 450mm of headroom, directly above the garage door opening. The motor, or garage door opener, is situated to the side of the door itself.
Step #1: Measure the Rough Opening
It should be one and a half inches longer than your new garage door's height. The header's space; this area should be nine inches wider than the door. The rough openings' width; it should be three inches longer than the door.
Coil coating and paint costs are key drivers in the price of your roll up door. Typically paint costs only increase due to the raw materials being utilized in other markets such as batteries and electric cars. Each of these markets utilize the same resins that are part of the ingredients to make paint.
The minimum clear opening height for a doorway is 80 inches, with an exception that allows door closers and overhead stops to be 78 inches (minimum) above the finished floor or ground.
Roll Up Doors
They are ideal for garages with low-clearance or tight spaces. Known for their durability and low-maintenance design, roll-up garage doors provide excellent security and insulation. Their sleek operation and customizable finishes make them a versatile and efficient option.
They can range in height from 6 feet to 20 feet, and will require different amounts of headroom depending on if the door is insulated. A service door will need 15 inches of clearance at 6 feet high and 19 inches of clearance at 20 feet tall.
Overhead clearance heights must follow local building and accessibility codes. They're generally 7 feet (84 inches) for ordinary parking spaces and 8 feet 2 inches (98.4 inches) for van-accessible spaces.
In order to install torsion-spring hardware, we recommend a clearance of 12 in. (305 mm).
Limitations in Design and Customizations
Some roll-up doors may not offer insulation properties, reducing energy efficiency options for customers. These limitations mean that certain architectural styles may not be compatible with roll-up doors, and customization options may be limited.
Rollup service doors: Rolling service doors need at least 14 inches of overhead clearance. For doors spanning the maximum width of 30 feet, the required hood height is 24 inches. Our Extreme® MicroCoil® Security Grille, designed to save space, requires headroom ranging from 10 1/2 inches to 11 3/4 inches.
Disadvantages of Roller Garage Doors
Higher cost: Roll-up doors are sometimes more expensive than traditional sectional garage doors. Expect to pay more for upgraded options, like high-performance models. Limited customizability: These styles generally offer fewer ways to tailor the door than traditional garage doors.

For insulated roller garage doors the space normally required is 300mm (205mm for a compact door) and 450mm for a single skin steel roller door.
Without proper spacing, a garage door just won't work. Most standard automatic openers require at least 12 inches of overhead clearance, some taking 18 inches. This includes about 12 inches for the door and torsion springs and three inches for the garage door opener. Some wood garage doors might require 18″ headroom.
Commercial Garage Door Sizes By Type
