These conditions include oxygen, proper temperature (often between 65 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit), moisture, and “food” (wood, in this case). Lab experiments have recorded that dry rot spores can germinate approximately seven to ten days after the wood has become damp enough. Older spores can take longer to germinate.
Normally, when wood is buried it decays rapidly. However, if the burial environment is very wet it can be preserved for centuries.
Unlike wet rot which can be eliminated by finding the source of moisture, dry rot will continue growing even when you've dried out the area. Once it gets going, dry rot can feed on the moisture in the timber. So as long as you have timber, it has food!

Boric acid is a powerful fungicide and can eradicate the rot-causing fungi as long as they haven't penetrated more than 1⁄4 inch (0.64 cm) into the wood. Sprinkle the boric acid over the rotting portion of your wood or timber and leave it there for 2–3 days.

Signs of Rot
First, look for peeling paint on wood surfaces. This indicates that water is penetrating the wood. As the sun dries the board, it pulls the water through the wood and separates the paint from the surface. Also, look for soft, punky wood that flakes off.
Once you've removed the crumbling wood, use a wet rot wood hardener and apply it to the wood with a paintbrush. Don't be afraid to lay it on thick and leave it to soak into the wood. When the hardener is dry, the rotten wood should be healthy again.
