The standard 12-inch overhang is ideal for most people, providing a comfortable and practical seating area. A 10-inch overhang can work if space is limited, but it might not be as comfortable. An 18-inch overhang offers plenty of legroom but requires additional support.
For starters, make sure you design your island with enough space underneath the counter for your knees. Generally speaking, a countertop overhang of 12-18” is a good place to start. It's worth noting that 12” likely won't allow your bar stools to tuck in all the way.
A typical overhang for a comfortable seating area should be around 25-30cm (10-12”), this should leave enough knee room and adequate space between the countertop edge and the person seated.
If your butcher block countertop has an overhang of more than 12 inches (30 cms) in the direction of the grain, it will need to be supported with brackets approximately every 24 inches (61 cms) underneath.

Your overhang in this situation should be a minimum of eight inches but could range up to 22 inches. One thing to consider when making your decision is whether it is important that your stools or chairs can be fully tucked away under the counter.

Standard Overhang
A typical countertop overhang will be 1.5 inches. Keep in mind, however, that this isn't always the case. In certain instances, a larger or smaller overhang may be desired. This is more common with custom countertops.
Granite thickness – granite tops with a thickness of 3 cm can have an 8-10 inch overhang without additional supports. If your granite top has a 2 cm thickness, we recommend attaching a support system should the overhang exceed 6 inches.
Standard countertop depths range from 24 to 25.5 inches from wall to edge, or edge-to-edge across the island. Most countertop boxes measure 24 inches in depth, with an inch and a half overhang for the countertop, making the overall depth of the countertop 25.5 inches.
The minimum worktop overhang is 200mm. The standard overhang for a breakfast bar is 250mm. While 300mm is the most comfortable knee space for an average-sized adult, you would need brackets to support the worktop if the overhang is greater than 300mm.
Generally, for comfortable seating, you'll need at least 12 inches of overhang. This allows enough space for legs and knees without feeling cramped. If you want to tuck your bar stools completely under the countertop, you'll need a larger overhang, typically around 15-18 inches.
Overhang. If you plan to include seating at the island, provide a comfortable overhang for legroom. A typical overhang for seating is around 12 to 18 inches (30 to 46 cm) from the edge of the countertop to the outer edge of the seating area.
For the eaves, which are the lower edges of the roof, the overhang should be between 12 and 18 inches. This means the roof should stick out 1 to 1.5 feet past the walls. For the rakes, which are the sloped edges of the roof at the gable ends, the overhang should be about 8 inches.
An unsupported span of no more than 36 inches is usually acceptable as long as the stone is supported on both sides.
Edge Banding: Edge banding will help to band the exposed edges of the plywood. This can be a thin strip of wood or veneer that matches the finish of the quartz or granite countertop. Edge banding hides the plywood and adds a professional touch to the overall appearance.

A standard bathroom cabinet overhang is about 1 to 1 1/2-inches. This slight overhang is attractive and helps protect the cabinets below the counters from spills. However, some homeowners desire a larger or smaller overhang due to the benefits each can offer.
The overhang of a table is simply how much the table top projects out beyond the legs or base of the table. Too little of an overhang can make a table look stubby, while too much can make it look almost precarious! Table top overhangs of 2 to 4 inches are quite standard, and give a proportional look to the table.
Most manufacturers allow a 300 to 400 mm overhang for 12- and 20mm countertops. With thinner porcelain, you can overhang as far as you would like, depending on the type of substrate.

Amount of overhang you have is the most important factor to consider in deciding whether you need support brackets. Most granite fabricators will recommend support brackets on overhangs over 12″ however, solely based on the overhang amount.
When it comes to 2 cm countertops, you have the option of not buying plywood for additional support. However, you will need to purchase plywood if you have an overhang over eight inches. If you are looking for something more affordable that still provides a good aesthetic, you can choose a 1.3 cm quartz.
