Water the plants with a gentle stream for about an hour. The water should slowly saturate the soil without creating puddles. Any puddling means that too much water is falling at once. Consider drip irrigation as a clever way to saturate the soil for an hour without holding up the garden hose or running the sprinklers.
Let the water soak in deeply.
For healthier roots and more drought-tolerant plants, let the soaker hose or sprinkler run long enough for water to soak in about six inches, and then don't water them again for several days.

Provide Slow, Deep Watering
If you are unsure how long to water new plants, aim for 30-60 seconds for small plants – longer for larger plants while moving the hose to a few locations around the plant. Avoid watering when the soil feels moist. The earth must be allowed to dry out between watering.
Morning watering is actually preferable to evening watering as the plant has time to dry before the sun goes down. At night, water tends to rest in the soil, around the roots, and on the foliage, which encourages rot, fungal growth, and insects.
DO water early in the morning when sunlight is weakest, the ground is coolest and foliage will have hours to dry before nightfall. Aim for between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. DON'T water in the evening when soil is warm and wet foliage can attract insects, fungus and disease.
Quick facts. Water your garden so that your plants always have enough moisture. On sandy, well-drained soil, you may need to water twice a week. For soils that hold moisture, such as heavier clay soils, or loamy soils rich in organic matter, watering once a week is fine.

Does hose diameter affect water pressure? A Larger diameter hose helps maintain the current water pressure as there is less resistance to the natural flow. A smaller diameter restricts the water flow, and in turn reduces the water pressure, but it increases the velocity (speed) the water travels.

Watering with a typical sprinkler using a standard 5/8" garden hose for one hour uses about 1,020 gallons of water; if you water three times per week, that's about 12,240 gallons per month.
If your soil is dry 12 hours after watering, you may need to water your garden twice a day. If it's drying out within 24 hours, you'll need to water every day while conditions stay the same. If it's still moist after 24 hours, you can wait a day or two to water again.
Soaker Hose Disadvantages
A soaker hose may degrade over a shorter period of time (4 years). The unregulated water release of a soaker hose is not as efficient (roughly 4lph per metre). Run in lengths up to 20-30 metres.
Drip emitter tubing stands out for its resistance to clogging. It's engineered to reduce the likelihood of dirt and debris build-up, unlike soaker hoses which are more prone to clogging.

Turn your hose on a slow trickle and place it 4-6” from the base of the plant. Let the hose run between 10-30 minutes, depending on the size of the root ball. Deep soaking is the best way to water your new plants. Deep soaking of a plant in its first year can be broken down into 5 phases.
Vegetables and fruits that are developing fruit during a heat spell need regular watering to ensure good production. Vegetables typically require daily watering during summer weather, but may need a second watering when temperatures are extremely high.
One square foot = 144 square inches. One gallon = 231 cubic inches. Therefore, an “inch of water” is 0.62 gallons per square foot of garden area. Unless you use a gallon jug to water a square foot garden, this number may still leave you wondering how to obtain that inch of water or 0.62 gallons per square foot.
Because the top few inches of soil dried out quickly, shallow-rooted vegetables such as cucumbers, spinach, cabbage, celery, corn, onions, leeks, carrots, broccoli, radishes, and Brussels sprouts will need frequent watering in hot weather or soils that are light on humus or compost.
