Preparing to Clean the Toilet Tank

Vinegar and baking soda produce that oh-so-familiar chemical reaction that powers through buildup and loosens tough stains. While it might seem like it's chewing its way through grime, it's not powerful enough to damage the porcelain finish of the toilet bowl.
Vinegar is safe and milder than caustic cleaners designed for the toilet, and those commercial cleaning agents can eat away the good bacteria in your septic system. To safely and inexpensively clean your toilet bowls, pour a generous glug of vinegar, followed by a heavy sprinkling of baking soda, into the bowl.
What I recommend, that works well is distilled white vinegar. As far as your toilet to keep it clean inside the bowl. Use 1 cup of white distilled vinegar and poor inside your toilet tank, also pour half of that cup in to the overflow, which is the small, round pipe that stands up in the middle of the tank .
Pour a cup of vinegar into the bowl, then mix it around with a toilet brush. Add a cup of baking soda to the coated areas and immediately follow up by adding another cup of vinegar. Wait about 10 minutes to allow the baking soda and vinegar to interact, creating that effective fizzing action.

Cleaning vinegar
It inhibits the growth of bacteria and algae. You follow the same procedure as bleach. For a tank of 100 litres of water, you'll need one litre of cleaning vinegar. Let everything soak in for 24 hours, and then rinse the tank and pipes well with clean water.
If there are brown stains, it is probably from iron in your water. If you discover a thick, slimy mess, it is likely from iron bacteria growing in your toilet tank. Iron bacteria is a bacteria that fixes to iron particles in the water.
Use an automatic toilet bowl cleaner.
It will clean your toilet automatically from the inside out with every flush, eliminating and preventing the growth of bacteria and hard water stains on it's journey to the bowl. Also, it will prolong the time your toilet stays clean.
If the clog still seems to be intact, start over at step 1 and repeat the process a couple of times. For extra-stubborn clogs, you can let the fizz mixture sit overnight or combine this method with plunging.
You should clean the toilet tank twice per year.
From cleaning countertops and floors, removing stains from cutting boards and plasticware, cleaning toilets, getting streak-free windows, cleaning appliances, and more, using distilled white vinegar for cleaning can be a very effective solution.
You may start to notice improvement in as little as 15 minutes, though that is the minimum time your dish soap should sit in the toilet. Again, we prefer to let it sit overnight whenever possible. Once enough time has passed, go ahead and flush your toilet.

After you've drained your hot water tank, you can pour a gallon or so of vinegar through it. To ensure the tank gets a thorough soak (try for 6 hours), close the drain valve before introducing the vinegar. Before you restore power to the unit, flush all the vinegar out.
