Basically, the idea is to spray a layer of oven cleaner on the bottom of the affected cookware. Because it wasn't clear in the video how long to leave it on, I followed the “spot-cleaning” instructions on the can of Easy Off and left it on for about a minute, then wiped clean with a paper towel and rinsed.
After cleaning your oven with oven cleaner, it's generally safe to cook in it once the cleaner has been thoroughly rinsed and any residual chemicals have been removed.
This product's cleaning power became obvious to our cooks when they tried the overnight cleaning method recommended on the package: Spray the oven with Easy-Off and let it set overnight. In the morning, we were able to wipe away stubborn burnt-on foods and grease with a damp rag.
Spray the cleaner all around your oven, close the door, and allow it to sit for 2 hours.
For stains and spills: apply EASY-OFF® Cooktop Cleaner directly to the surface. Clean with a damp cloth or paper towel. Wipe the cooktop surface until clean. For burnt on stains: leave formula on for 60 seconds before cleaning.
Key Instructions for Safely Using a Self-Cleaning Oven
First and foremost, don't leave your oven unattended during self-cleaning.
Generally, a Range is not used while the oven is going through a Self-Clean cycle.
Take caution to avoid certain oven parts while using oven cleaner. The heating elements on the top or bottom of the unit and gaskets should be off limits. The cleaner could cause them to degrade and lose their airtight seal.
Fill an oven-safe dish with equal parts water and white vinegar, pop it in the oven, set it to 200°F, and let it steam for about 30 minutes. “It's basically a steam room for your oven to help it sweat out all the gunk,” says Webber. “After it's cooled down, wipe everything down — bye-bye lingering chemicals.”
Avoid breathing spray mist. Avoid spraying oven pilot light. Keep off all electrical connections such as heating element, thermostat, bulb receptacles, and light switch. Do not mix with other chemicals or cleaning products.
Can oven cleaner fumes poison your food? That's not very likely. As I've said, oven cleaners are pretty volatile, which means they evaporate easily. It's therefore unlikely there will be any leftover residue to poison your food.
If you have a self-cleaning oven, you can use Easy-Off for self-cleaning ovens which will be less harsh on the porcelain finish. You can also use the Ammonia method: First, turn the oven on, let it warm to 150°F (65°C), and then turn it off.
Wait Time: Typically, it's recommended to wait at least 1-2 hours after cleaning with a chemical oven cleaner before using the oven again. This allows the fumes to dissipate and ensures that no harmful residues remain.
Spray with Easy Off (Lye) Yellow Cap
Step one is to spray a heavy layer of Easy Off oven cleaner on the cast iron. This can be used to clean off heavy carbon build up, but will not remove rust. This method is completely safe and washing the cast iron in soap and water will remove all the lye from the piece.
Cleaning oven racks is easy. Simply spray them with oven cleaner and leave them to sit overnight. It's best to do this outdoors because of the fumes.
PRECAUTIONS: Do not spray on pilot light, electrical connections, switches, heating elements, or thermostats.Do not spray onto aluminum or painted surfaces as damage to these surfaces may occur.Do not use on microwave, convection, or continuous-cleaning ovens.
What if, however, you just finished deep-cleaning your oven, using a self-clean cycle or a chemical cleaner? Despite your efforts, this could be the culprit of any haze or that off-putting charred scent: There might be product residue causing a bit of smoke or even an unpleasant smell.
While the convenience of leaving the racks in might be tempting, the self-clean cycle involves intense heat that can lead to unintended consequences. Leaving the racks in during this process can result in warping, discoloration, and even potential damage to the oven's internal components.
All grates without bumpers (including flat-wire grates) can be cleaned in a self-clean oven. In 2016, bumpers started being moved from the grates to the cooktop surface on new gas range models. Current 2017 gas ranges models (including free-standing, slide-ins and drop-ins) now have self-cleanable grates.
“The self-cleaning mode heats your oven up to 900 degrees and incinerates everything in the oven,” explains San Angelo. “This includes on the glass—you may still need to wipe the glass after the self-cleaning cycle is done, but always make sure your oven is fully cooled.”
Door is locked during the Self-Clean cycle
The oven will need to cool to approximately 200°F (95°C) before the door will open. Allow the oven to cool, for approximately 30-90 minutes, move the latch arm to the left to unlock the door.
Then, let it cool down. Total Wait Time: You should wait at least 1-2 hours after using chemical cleaners to ensure all fumes have dissipated and residues have burned off.
