It is even possible to reuse the carpet grippers after they have been removed using this method, but because the nails are now pushed down, and slightly curved after being removed they are a bit arkward to hammer back down.

The carpet wasn't installed properly
If the carpet was not initially installed correctly, it may not grip onto the tack rods securely. This could be due to improper stretching, inadequate tucking or using the wrong type of gripper rods for the carpet (explained in more detail below).
Make sure the spikes are facing in towards the wall. They have arrows on them normally. DON'T get them the wrong way around, or they won't grip the carpet (surprise!). Underlay in as many whole pieces as possible using strategic cuts over pieces joined up where possible butted up against grippers.
Without them, a carpet installation can look poor in some cases; not using carpet grippers makes a carpet almost unusable! Without grippers holding the carpet in place, you can expect the carpet to be wrinkled and look tatty.
Simply pick up the rug, clean the carpet or floor as you would normally, then wipe down the gripper with a damp cloth, let it dry, then put the rug back down — sticky again! That's because water reactivates the silicone grip, and it becomes sticky again. Pros: Washable and reusable.
Is it dumb to put a rug over a carpet? No, it's not. First, carpeted floors are expensive to clean. But layering an area rug adds a stylish shield allowing you to clean a spillage before it stains.
Place the flat end of the pry bar or flat-head screwdriver under the edge of the gripper, close to one of the nails. Gently tap the end of the pry bar or screwdriver with the hammer to wedge it further under the gripper. Be careful not to hit the wooden floor directly, as this can cause damage.
The gripper pins are extremely sharp and you should take care not to cut yourself. Position each carpet gripper approximately 10mm away from the skirting board, with the pins facing up and pointing towards the wall. This allows just enough space for the carpet to be tucked in around the edges.
Reusing carpet underlay can be a viable option if the underlay is in good condition, offering cost savings and environmental benefits. However, it's crucial to thoroughly assess the underlay for any signs of wear, damage, or moisture before deciding.
Carpet grippers are easy to install, you just nail or stick them to the floor around the perimeter of your room, and the angled pins will hold your carpet in place securely.
Leave all the existing grippers where they are as they can be reused. Leave the existing door bars and thresholds down to be reused. Ensure there is a big enough gap beneath each opening door to accommodate the new carpet and underlay.
Tread and riser placement
Tread gripper: This rod should be positioned along the back edge of the tread, 7-8mm from the riser. The pins on the gripper rod should face towards the riser. Riser gripper: This rod should be placed at the bottom of the riser, about 7-8mm above the next tread.
If there is a small area of damage on the carpet, you can use a carpet patch to cover it up. This is essentially a piece of carpet cut to the same shape and size as the damaged area. The patch is then glued or stapled onto the surface and trimmed down to match the surrounding fibers.

Folding the rugs for shipment will not damage them as cotton and wool are very malleable, natural materials. It also protects the top layer of your carpet from furniture indentations and the wear and tear of foot traffic. Without a carpet cushion or padding underneath your carpet, you'll end up with a frayed and worn carpet—on both sides. And you will need to replace it much sooner.
