Automatic doors should, as the name implies, automatically open as soon as they detect someone in front of the door. A quality automatic door should open within seconds. Typically, they should remain open for a minimum of five seconds before shutting to allow the person time to pass through.
The ADA guidelines require that a automatic door stay open for a minimum of 5 seconds to allow for safe passage.
These doors should remain open for not less than five seconds and shall close from 90 degrees to 10 degrees in three seconds or longer. Doors shall close from 10 degrees to fully closed in not less than 1.5 seconds.
LULA swing doors, private residence elevator doors, and platform lift gates and doors must remain open for 20 seconds minimum. This does not apply to the doors of passenger elevators complying with §407 which must remain fully open for at least 3 seconds in response to a call (§407.3. 5).

Automatic and Power Assisted Doors
Per section 404.3 of the ADA requirements, it states "doors are not required to be automated, but must comply when provided.
10 Door and Gate Surfaces. Swinging door and gate surfaces within 10 inches (255 mm) of the finish floor or ground measured vertically shall have a smooth surface on the push side extending the full width of the door or gate.
In order to be ADA compliant, existing door thresholds are required to have a vertical height no greater than ¼”. However, a vertical height of up to ¾” is allowed if a transition ramp is applied. If the door threshold is higher than ¾” then an associated level-landing is required.
