Often time you may feel the need to use your Lasko space heater overnight to keep the chill away. We do not recommend, under any circumstances to run a heater unattended. Heaters draw quite a bit of electricity and can reach high temperatures while running.
Additionally, no Lasko space heater should be ran unattended for any amount of time. This is to ensure safe functionality of the heater at all times.
Is it safe to leave a space heater on overnight? While there is much debate about this topic, the general, expert consensus is a resounding “no” — and you should never leave it running overnight. “No, it's absolutely not safe to use a space heater at night,” states Glenn Gault, CEO at Gault Heating & Cooling.
If an overheat temperature is reached, the heater will automatically shut off. It can only be resume operation when the user resets the unit.
You Should Not Leave Space Heaters on Unattended
We do not recommend using space heaters at all because of this risk, but you definitely should not use them at night. If your home is too cold at night, you may want to consider adjusting your thermostat to better meet your needs.
The duration for which you can leave a space heater running depends on the time of day and your specific needs. During the Day: It's safe to leave your heater on for 6-8 hours if you're in the room. If you're busy or moving between rooms, consider using a timer to automatically shut it off after a few hours.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, space heaters are involved in more than a thousand home fires every year.
Manufacturer: Lasko Products Inc., of West Chester, Pa. Hazard: An electrical connection in the base of the unit can overheat, causing it to melt and expose the electrical connection, posing a fire hazard to consumers.
Most space heaters, including this Lasko model, are 1,500 watts. If you run a space heater for eight hours a day, it may cost you about $2 per day, depending on your local rates. We've broken it down even further in our guide on how much electricity a space heater uses.
Overusing the heater or using an oversized heater can result in elevated levels of carbon monoxide or nitrogen dioxide fumes in the air. These fumes can cause cold or flu-like symptoms, headaches, and eye, nose and throat irritation.
Running a space heater overnight increases the risk of fire. If the unit is left unattended or placed too close to flammable materials, such as curtains or bedding, it can ignite and lead to a devastating fire.
3. Once the room temperature reaches 2 degrees above the set temperature, the Heater will shut off.
Oil filled radiator space heaters are some of the safest on the market. 1500W is all the juice an outlet will provide (Roughly 5,000 btus).
Fires are one of the biggest risks associated with leaving electric heaters on all night. If an electric heater has frayed wiring or malfunctions, then there is a high chance of it igniting. Electric heaters also make the air in the room really dry by conducting a lot of heat.
If your breaker is tripping and the space heater is shutting off, the cause may be an overload of the circuit. The majority of Lasko space heaters pull 1,500 watts on high and 900 watts on low. This equates to about 12.5 amps on high and about 7.5 amps on low.
Often time you may feel the need to use your Lasko space heater overnight to keep the chill away. We do not recommend, under any circumstances to run a heater unattended.
Example (you can use an electric heater running cost calculator below for different wattages/kWh prices): If we assume the price of electricity is $0.1319 per kWh, a 1,500-watt electric space heater will cost; $0.20 to run per hour. $4.80 to run per 24 hours (day). $11.20 to run per week (8h/day).
If it's within your budget to spend a little more, we think the Lasko Ceramic Digital Tower is worth the extra expense. Testing the automatic shut-off of the Amazon heater as well as the time to heat a room and energy consumption.
Space heaters that are electric do not create carbon monoxide, as there is no combustion or burning. Heaters that burn something can create carbon monoxide if there is not enough oxygen to support complete combustion.
Sealed combustion heaters are much safer to operate than other types of space heaters, and operate more efficiently because they do not draw in the heated air from the room and exhaust it to the outdoors. They are also less likely to backdraft and adversely affect indoor air quality.
Similar to when purchasing a new car, there is a non-toxic odor that may accompany the heater. As the heater runs, the smell should dissipate. It is important to mention that Lasko complies with all required safety testing to ensure our products meet or exceed these expectations.
Recommended Usage Times. During the Day: It's generally safe to run your space heater for 6 to 8 hours during the day while you're home and active.
Using a space heater can be a good way to boost the temperature in a small, drafty room—and it could be less expensive than cranking up your central heating system. But a space heater is economical only if you use it judiciously.
Space heaters can pose potential risks if not used properly. They have the potential to cause fires if placed too close to flammable materials or left unattended. Additionally, using extension cords that are not rated for the heater's power can increase the risk of overheating and electrical hazards.
