2.2 - Height (42 - 48 inches) The height of the manual fire alarm boxes shall be not less than 42 inches and not more than 48 inches measured vertically, from the floor level to the activating handle or lever of the box. 2013 NFPA 72 17.14.
NFPA 72 sets standards for the minimum and maximum mounting heights for fire alarm control units. The devices must be located between 1.5 and 5.5 feet above the finished floor to provide maximum accessibility.
As defined by the NFPA, the location of a wall-mounted audible appliance shall have their tops not less than 90 in. above the floor and not less than 6 in. below the ceiling. This requirement is superseded by strobe loca- tion requirements when an audible appliance is installed in combination with a strobe.
How high should I mount a sounder/beacon? A standard sounder/strobe or individual strobe should be mounted 2.1m above the floor and not closer than 150mm from the finished ceiling.
Most commercial buildings deal with non-sleeping areas. Here, NFPA 72 height requirements are strobes must be installed 80 to 96 inches above the finished floor and 6 inches from the ceiling. Ceiling-mounted strobes are permitted on ceilings that are no higher than 30 feet.
A correctly orientated plan of the building must be displayed close to the control panel showing entrances, escape routes and zones. Fire alarm panels (standard Kentec) with LCD display should be mounted such that the top of the panel is at 1.65 metres +/- 0.1 metres above floor level.
While installation heights are not specifically mentioned in most manufacturer's printed installation instructions, we would recommend that you install these modules not higher than 1800 mm above the finished floor (for ease of access).
The bell should be mounted a minimum of 8 ft. from the floor or as close to the ceiling as possible.
The rule of thumb for the ideal height for your speakers is that the speakers should be at ear height. We assume that you often listen sitting down. This way, the sound from the speakers goes in a clear direction, i.e. the direction of your ear. Do you have speakers you want to place at ear level?
It states that if the visual alarm is positioned too low it may not be seen, and recommends 2.1m as the minimum mounting height, but most applications would be higher than this. The British Standard also recommends that Fire Alarm Beacons aren't positioned any closer than 150mm from the ceiling.
Ceiling mounted: At least 4 inches from any adjoining wall surface. Wall mounted: Between 4 inches and 12 inches from the ceiling. Peaked or sloped ceilings: Within 36 inches of the peak or the high side of the slope, but no closer than 4 inches vertically or from an adjoining wall surface.
Preferably in an area of low fire risk and on the ground floor by the entrance used by the Fire Brigade and preferably viewable from outside of the building. It should be located in an area common to all building users and where automatic detection is in use, the Control Panel should be in a protected area.
A Break Glass Call Point is a device which enables personnel to raise the alarm by breaking the frangible element on the facia. They should be mounted 1.4m from the floor and sited where they can be easily seen. Manual Call Points should be sited on the floor landings of stairways and at exits to open air.
Requirements for Fire Alarm Systems
The pull lever cannot require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. In addition, the pull lever should be within reach range or between 48 inches and 15 inches above the finish floor or ground.
The standard height for an alarm system keypad is probably around 4.5 feet high. However, anywhere from 4 to 5 feet up is usually okay. It really comes down to the height of the end user and what they feel most comfortable with. Some users will mount it higher, and some will mount it lower.
The simple answer that the operable part of the pull station needs to be at least 42 in. (1.07 m), and not more than 48 in. (1.22 m), above the finished floor. Additionally, one pull station needs to be within 5 ft (1.5 m) of each exit doorway on each floor where required to be installed in a building.
Wall-mounted alarms should be installed not more than 12 inches away from the ceiling (to the top of the alarm).
Choose a mounting height for your fire alarm bell based on your manufacturer's guidelines and ceiling height. Various installation guides recommend a mounting height of at least 8 feet (or 2.4 meters) from the floor and as close to the ceiling as possible.
A minimum of 36-inches clearance in front of the panel must be maintained from the floor to 6-feet, 6-inches above the panel, or to the top of the panel whichever is highest. A minimum of 30-inches clearance from side to side must be maintained in front of the panel.

NFPA 72 tells us how to properly install required strobe lights. It allows strobes to be installed on either the ceiling up to a height of 30 feet, or the wall between 80 and 96 inches. Personally, I prefer strobes on the ceiling because they are harder to obstruct.
