Most farmhouse sinks stick out past the face of the cabinets from . 75 of an inch to as many as 2 inches. Take a look at nearby drawers prior to ordering your sink to ensure that you will have clearance when the drawer is extended.
How Far Past the Countertop? The most common countertop overhang is 1.5″. We wanted our sink to go about 1/2″ past the countertop, so we positioned our sink so that it would go 2″ past the cabinet face frame/front of the cabinet.
OVERHANG - The countertop extends over the edge of the sink on all sides by approximately 1/8" - 1/4". Use caution with this installation to be sure that accessories such as colanders or cutting boards will fit properly. Besides, in order to avoid backsplash spots at the bottom of the upper cabinet, please leave more space between the upper cabinet and the sink. Usually, the upper cabinets should be at least 12 inches above the sink.
The standard space between the countertop and upper cabinets is around 18 inches.
There are pros and cons to centered and offset drains. But to sum up, we recommend offset drains for small and busy kitchens, and centered drains for larger sinks and quick renovation projects.
We normally go ⅜ inch inside the sink for the overhang, but this can be flexed for the look you desire.
The primary benefit of a grid for new farmhouse sinks is to protect the brand new finish. Fresh copper and even hardened fireclay scratch more easily than you might realize. The metal bottom of pots, the metal tines of forks, and even the scrape of ceramic plate edges might cause a small flaw in the finish.

Upper and base cabinets can match if you want them to. However, if you want to add variation to your space, they don't have to match. It's all about the appearance and mood you would like to achieve.
Standard countertop overhang is 1 ½ inches.
Keep in mind that this is 1 ½ inches over the front edge of the base cabinet. While some countertops may have different overhang measurements, this is the number that is seen as standard for homes.
Most homes have kitchen cabinets that are 32 or 36 inches tall, with an interval of 1 to 2 feet between the tops of the cabinets and the ceiling.
Most sink manufacturers provide a template. Position the template so it is centered on the sink cabinet and is at least 1 1/2 inches back from the countertop's front edge. If your countertop is deeper than 24 inches, place it farther back, but not more than 4 inches.
Guidelines recommend including at least a 24” wide landing area to one side of the sink, and at least an 18” wide landing area on the other side. Notice the sink can be close to a corner, as long as the return has 21” of frontage.

Clearance in front of the vanity: 21" minimum, although 30" is recommended for a total of 51" from the wall.
One of the drawbacks of choosing a farmhouse sink is the installation process. Depending on how your kitchen is set up, you may have to alter the size and design of your countertops before the farmhouse sink installation. Farmhouse sinks are much deeper and wider than classic kitchen sinks.
