You should leave a gap of at least 100 mm to 150 mm (4 to 6 inches) between the bottom of your window sill and the top of the radiator. This clearance allows cool air to be drawn into the bottom of the unit and ensures warm air circulates freely.
A 50–100mm gap is recommended between the top of the radiator and the underside of a window sill. This spacing allows warm air to rise freely and circulate into the room.
Positioning a radiator directly beneath the window intercepts this descending cold air before it reaches floor level. The rising warm air from the radiator meets the falling cold air, creating a thermal curtain that prevents cold draughts from spreading into the room.

Full-length curtains look great, but pull them closed and you may not benefit from your radiator at all. We've seen clients combine blinds and curtains, closing the blinds at night and using the curtains as dressing to soften the look.”
When the heating is on, you ideally want to keep floor length curtains open. If the curtains are closed when the radiator is on, the heat will get trapped behind the curtains. So instead of the heat circulating into the room, it will likely leave through the cold window glass.
Avoid Direct Contact With the Radiator
Not only should you avoid touching a hot radiator to prevent burns, you should also keep anything in the room from coming into contact with it. Chairs, sofas, couches, and other furniture will interfere with the circulation of heat generated from the unit.
It takes time for your home to warm up and cool down. If you're not sure how long it takes, try turning the heating on about 30 minutes before you need it. You should turn it off 30 minutes before you'll stop needing it.
The choice between a 2-row and 3-row radiator comes down to cooling capacity versus physical space. A 3-row radiator holds more coolant and has more surface area to shed heat, making it ideal for heavy towing or high-horsepower engines. However, it is thicker and allows less airflow than a 2-row.
Add 10% to your radiator size calculation for each window and 15-20% for French doors. Single-glazed windows lose heat faster than double-glazed ones. If you have older windows, you might need a bigger radiator. External doors also affect heat loss.
While you no longer need to fit your radiator under the window, there is some logic in doing so. Historically, radiators were fitted in the coldest part of the room – the exterior wall – where cold air would enter and drop to the floor.

I do agree - a rad approx the same width as the window will look a lot better than a much narrower one, so I'd also stick with the 1000mm wide rad and then the rad world height is yer oyster; taller will need a teeny bit more tweaking.
Curtains can safely go over radiators, but they shouldn't touch them directly. Most modern radiators don't get hot enough to ignite fabrics, but prolonged exposure to heat can damage certain materials or cause discolouration.

For instance, if you typically arrive home from work at around 6pm on weekdays, you could set your heating to activate just as you walk through the door.
It could be a hazard under HHSRS if the bedroom can't be heated to a safe temperature in winter. However the landlord could likely mitigate this by providing you with a fan heater or oil filled portable radiator. However if enough heat travels in from the rest of the house you wouldn't have any argument.

Additionally, thick curtains hanging over a rad may actually hinder heat from circulating evenly around your room and could cause you to turn the heat up to compensate. Increased use of energy would increase your heating bills. Decorative hanging drapes should also be kept well clear of radiators.
Putting an egg in a car radiator can temporarily seal a pinhole leak to help you reach a repair shop. The boiling coolant cooks the egg, and the proteins are pulled into the leak, forming a plug. This is strictly an emergency roadside hack.
A radiator usually fails due to internal corrosion, external blockages, or pressure buildup caused by a separate issue in the cooling system. Over time, these factors lead to cracks, leaks, or severe clogging that prevent the engine from cooling properly.
The top of a radiator can be the perfect place for a built-in shelf. When a piece of wood or stone is placed on top, a bulky radiator becomes a handy side table or bookshelf. If you're using wood, be aware that it might warp, particularly if you place it directly on the radiator.
Radiators are generally low-risk, but they can become a fire hazard if flammable materials (clothes, curtains, furniture) are placed directly on or too close to them. While hydronic (water) radiators rarely get hot enough to ignite items, electric radiators can pose a higher risk if covered, blocking ventilation.
Radiators shouldn't get anywhere close to hot enough to melt anything other than a candle or chocolate. Cords and PC should be fine. Having said that, heat kills electronics, so best case for the pc would be to locate it as far away from the radiator as possible.
