The machines have (especially the new ones) have an electrical lock on them, to prevent the door from opening whilst in cycle. These locks are powered by electricity and if you unplug your washing machine, once the residual power drained from the machine the lock should release.
Use a Flathead Screwdriver: If your washing machine has a door lock that can be manually released, you might be able to use a flathead screwdriver to push the release tab or lever. Be gentle to avoid damaging the lock.
There are three recommended methods of unblocking a washing machine drain yourself. These are to use baking soda and vinegar, a chemical drain cleaner, or do it manually. You can also potentially fix the issue by straightening out the washing machine drain hose if it has become twisted.
If the cycle has finished and the door is still locked, it may be due to a power outage or a fault in the machine's electrical system. In this case, try unplugging the machine and waiting for a few minutes before plugging it back in.
Most washing machines use a thermal lock that releases the door two minutes after a cycle is complete.
Stopping a washing machine mid-cycle varies depending on the type and model of your appliance. Most modern washing machines have a “pause” or “stop” button that allows you to interrupt the cycle safely. For front-loading machines, pressing this button will often unlock the door, enabling you to add or remove items.
Washer Control Reset
To reset the electronic controls on your washer, shut off the circuit breaker or fuse to the washer or unplug the washer for 2 minutes. For models that have a timer control knob, turn the knob around and back to any position other than final spin for the interrupted cycle. Then, restore power.
Normally waiting for the cycle to end is all you need to do to unlock the door, or turn your washer on if it's off. If you get stuck, though, you can drain the water from front load washers using the emergency drain hose; once the water is gone, the door will unlock.
Safety: The primary advantage of a washing machine lock is enhanced safety. It prevents users from accidentally interrupting the washing cycle, or children from opening the drum or accessing the detergent compartment, reducing the risk of water damage or injury.
One reason is timing. Sometimes, the locks can take time to release as they need to cool down. Wait some time and come back to check if your door has unlocked after a few minutes – you should be able to hear the locks open when the laundry cycle is done.
Turn off the machine for 5-10 minutes and try opening it again: This method works in most cases when the door lock is stuck. Turning off the machine for a few minutes gives it time to reset and release the door lock. After a few minutes, try opening the door again.
Turn the washing machine off and unplug it.
Then, unplug the machine and wait 5-10 minutes. Try pulling the handle again to see if the door opens. Some locks automatically flip into the unlocked position after 5-10 minutes so that you can get your clothes during a power outage.
If the cycle has finished and the door is still locked, it may be due to a power outage or a fault in the machine's electrical system. In this case, try unplugging the machine and waiting for a few minutes before plugging it back in. This can sometimes reset the machine and release the door lock.

To remove a lock washer, use a wrench or a similar tool to remove the nut or threaded fastener that holds the lock washer in place. Next, use a flathead screwdriver to pry the lock washer loose. If you remove a split washer, place the screwdriver head under the washer or inside the split.
