Temporarily Silencing the Alarm The basic instruction for temporarily silencing your alarm system is to press the silence or hush button, which will deactivate the triggers for a few minutes. Most smoke detectors have this button named 'test,' which you can press and hold for a few seconds to get the job done.
Turn off the circuit breaker for your smoke alarms. If your smoke alarms don't have battery backup, doing that will turn all of them off. If your smoke alarms have battery backup, go to the faulty smoke alarm, twist off the cover. Once the wires are exposed, carefully disconnect the smoke alarm.
Use a Temporary Cover: - Plastic Bag: If you must cover the alarm, use a clean plastic bag. Make sure it is only temporary and remove it as soon as you no longer need it. - Masking Tape: You can use masking tape to lightly tape over the alarm. This should also be a temporary solution.
Covering a smoke alarm is generally not recommended, as it can prevent the alarm from functioning properly and put you at risk in case of a fire. However, if you need to temporarily disable a smoke alarm for a specific reason (like during cooking), here are some safer alternatives to consider: Use a Temporary Cover:
Get a step ladder and carefully reach for the alarm. Pressing the “Test/Silence” button on the front of the unit should stop it from beeping or chirping. If this doesn't work, grasp the device and turn it counterclockwise.

(WITHOUT TAMPERING WITH THEM OR COVERING THEM UP, which is illegal and could open you up to criminal liability should a fire occur, and we definitely don't want that)!
Fortunately, it's easy to cover a smoke detector and prevent it from going off at an inopportune time. Just place a strip of painter's tape over the unit's sensor chamber, or wrap it up with a shower cap or plastic bag and secure it with a rubber band.
Covering the smoke detector with a dishcloth can work. You could also use a shower cap or a rubber band and plastic wrap to temporarily disable the smoke detector. Once again, it is important to remember to uncover it when you are finished cooking.
IMPORTANT: Deactivation of the alarm is permanent. Once the alarm has been deactivated, it cannot be reactivated or mounted back onto the mounting plate and will no longer detect smoke or carbon monoxide.
For most devices, find and hold the button on the front of the alarm, until the alarm stops, to reset the device. Or, find the button labeled "Silent" or "Hush" to disable an inactive alarm. Totally disable an alarm by disconnecting its wires.
In addition, it can take days for a battery to completely drain, and the chirping will continue throughout that time. How long does it take a smoke alarm to stop chirping? An alarm will continue to chirp for at least seven days after its battery has died.
Disconnect the wire harness by squeezing the locking arms on the quick connector while pulling the connector away from the bottom of the alarm. Battery-operated alarms will not have a wire harness.
Use a rubber band to hold the shopping bag
Cover the smoke detector with the shopping bag, stretching a rubber band on the upper side of the shopping bag where the opening of ceiling meets. You can use tape as well for sealing it off instead of tape if you don't have.
Socks belong on the floor or on your feet, not hanging off the ceiling over the smoke detector.
ACalifornia law requires that every ”dwelling intended for human occupancy” have smoke alarms. (Cal. Health and Safety Code section 13113.7).
A disconnected smoke detector or one stuffed with a plastic bag is worthless if there is a fire. These detectors are there to save your life when you least expect it. Removing or tampering with detectors will get you in trouble or worse!
Due to UL regulations for smoke detectors, the nightlight cannot be turned off completely. It will be a dim green on the lowest setting to show you that the unit is receiving power.
The smoke alarm is desensitized by pushing the “Test/Hush” button on the smoke alarm cover. If the smoke is not too dense, the alarm will silence immediately. If the smoke or debris is interfering with the sensor, the alarm will override the Hush.
The main purpose of a fire damper is to prevent flame from crossing a fire barrier. They're installed near the wall or floor, as appropriate, and are effectively a part of the barrier they protect the integrity of. Fire dampers respond to heat, when the temperature reaches a set point the damper slams shut.
