Yep, just take your kitchen doors off. Give them a quick freshen up by painting the insides or even, as we mentioned above, wallpapering the backs of them. Then just fill them with all your nicest crockery and kitchen accessories.
Can you paint Ikea Cabinets? Yes! The answer is yes and they even turn out well! When we did our huge kitchen remodel, we needed to add 3 cabinets and a pantry.
The cabinet itself is no problem, they are easy enough to cut down with little to no visible evidence. It's the aforementioned doors where you'll need to think carefully. Generally you aim for the cut edge of the door to be out of sight, either low or high.
Standard American wall cabinets are 12″ deep, sometimes 13″ if the door is inset (set inside the face frame). When IKEA introduced their SEKTION line, they increased the depth of their wall cabinets to 15″, so you get 3″ of additional depth on each cabinet.
If you have old cabinets that are still in good shape but the doors are terrible, you can use IKEA cabinet doors to replace them.
One thing I do want to say is that people are obsessed with a smooth finish with cabinets. And a roller will give that to you! Or you can spray your cabinets.
Tools & Materials For Painting Ikea Cabinets
In addition to your cabinets (we ordered Ikea's VEDDIGNE door and drawer fronts) you'll need the following: Sandpaper or sanding block in a 120 to 220 grit* Tack cloths. Paint (we used Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel in a satin finish)
What do you use to clean the cabinets with? According to Ikea, the best cleaning method for the Kungsbacka door fronts is soap and water. We've been using dish soap and a wet microfiber rag for the past 2 years and thus far it has done a really good job of cleaning up the prints. We do this maybe once every 2-3 months.
Use mild detergent
Mix 2 tablespoons of dish soap into 2 cups of warm water. You can also use a mixture of vinegar and water. Apply the mild cleaning detergent of your choice to your cabinets using a clean, soft cloth.
At IKEA we recommend using a soft cloth dampened with water or a mild cleaner, if necessary, for cleaning your cabinet frames, fronts, shelves and other wooden surfaces. Use only cleaning agents that are intended for the materials you have. Avoid any agents that contain ammonia, alcohol, bleach or an abrasive.
Can you paint over Ikea furniture without sanding? On laminate furniture, yes you can! But remember, when I say no sanding – it means you don't have to use a lot of strength or an electric sander to get the “finish” completely off. We do need very light scuffing on the entire piece to roughen up the surface.
However, like latex paint, 1-2-3 Primer is water-based, so it won't adhere as well to laminate furniture without first sanding, and a longer cure time is also recommended when painting laminate. Zinsser Cover-Stain Primer – This is an oil-based primer. Oil-based primers provide great adhesion.
Allowing the paint to dry completely between coats to avoid bubbling and peeling, apply 2 thin coats of latex paint, followed by 2 thin coats of water-based polyurethane with a new brush or foam roller using slow, even strokes. Wait at least 72 hours before using your uniquely revamped Lack side table.
SEKTION gives you complete control over drawer layouts.
“In the AKURUM system, the base cabinet width dictated the drawer configuration,” Dan notes. “Narrower cabinets could have either three or four drawers, while the wider cabinets only came with four drawers. The heights of the drawers were arbitrarily fixed.”
5.0 out of 5 stars Use with Ikea Kitchen Cabinets! These are great for 145 degree opening of ikea cabinet door hinges - the dampers they sell do not work with these hinges. I used it with a very tall pantry cabinet door so I bought/used two - but only one per average sized cabinet door is needed.
IKEA doors are designed to fit properly in front of each cabinet. If the door is too long, or if you wish to repurpose the cabinet door for another piece of cabinetry or project, cut the door to the proper size using a few tools. When cutting down the IKEA cabinet door, be careful not to cut too much.
