If you're working with a very large area of uneven wall that requires a lot of material removal, your best bet is a belt sander.
Wet-sanding requires a damp sponge to smooth out and remove excess taping compound after it dries. When moistened with a sponge, the drywall compound begins to dissolve and loosen, and it can then be smoothed out. Wet-sanding is usually done with a very thick, stiff sponge.

A special trick to give the appearance of a dust-free environment is to go over your wooden furniture with a dryer sheet after wiping it down with the cloth we mentioned earlier. The dryer sheet will make your furniture look cleaner, but it will also prevent any dust particles from sticking to the wood surfaces.
Barriers made of sheet plastic available at any hardware store prevent drywall dust from traveling past a sequestered area. Set up a box fan, with the air flowing outside, to expel some drywall dust. Though the fan will not remove all dust, it will significantly cut down on the amount of dust clouding up the air.
