Sand the eggshell finish to promote adhesion. Eggshell finishes have a light sheen that enhances the appearance of the surface they coat. Unfortunately, when the time comes for repainting, this sheen can interfere with adhesion. Flat paint will not bond to an eggshell finishe unless the existing coating is abraded.
Painting. Use watercolour or acrylic paints; the former is best with small children, who might miss the egg in their enthusiasm.
FLAT, EGGSHELL, OR SATIN PAINT
To apply flat, eggshell, or satin paints and stains, a knit roller cover is recommended.
We recommend two coats of this eggshell interior paint in order to achieve full depth of colour. Each coat of Interior Eggshell will be surface dry within one hour, and ready for a second coat after four hours of drying time.
Eggshell Finish
The Cons: It is very hard to touch up. Because it has the slight sheen to it, it's almost impossible to only add a new layer in small areas without it being visible. Usually a “touch-up” of eggshell means re-doing a full wall. Best For: Walls in any room where you want a little more sheen.
For the best application, the surface must be clean, dry and free from any loose and flaking material. Before applying Hardwearing Acrylic Eggshell to bare/new metal surfaces, a primer like Leyland Trade All Purpose Primer is required.
You do not need to apply a sealer with eggshell or satinwood paint.
When to Use Eggshell Paint. Eggshell is commonly used in living rooms and dining rooms, as it is durable and does not pick up dirt easily. If your walls have bumps or imperfections, an extra coat of eggshell can disguise them more easily than satin or high-gloss finishes.
Eggshell, as its name suggests, is a no-shine finish with very little luster to it. While this paint isn't as durable as the higher gloss products, it covers wall imperfections very well and works on walls that don't get a lot of bumps or scuffs.
Load your paintbrush evenly and start at an edge of your woodwork, use the brush on its side for an even flow and always follow the grain of the wood. Tah-dah! Now time to leave the first coat to dry and grab yourself a cuppa! Once dry give the painted area another light sand to remove any bubbles or dust.
Eggshell is a paint sheen, or gloss, that looks and feels somewhat flat but with a slight gloss to it. Eggshell paint is between matte (or flat) and satin paint sheens. Eggshell paint reflects more light than matte to produce a low luster.
The normal finishing process is 2 full coats of Dulux Trade Eggshell. However, where a strong colour change is required, then a coat of an appropriate coloured Dulux Trade Undercoat may be necessary.
The fact is, raw eggs take dye just as well as hard-boiled eggs do. So now I skip the cooking-and-cooling prep work and dip raw eggs into the dye bath instead. The raw eggs come out with the same beautiful colors but none of the unsightly cracks that are often a byproduct of boiling the eggs.
Stir thoroughly before use to ensure the paint is completely mixed. Apply 2 coats of Dulux colour mixing Eggshell using a good quality synthetic brush. Allow 6 hours between coats, longer when cold and damp. Where a strong colour change is involved, more coats may be required.
Eggshell paint drying times
In a typical scenario, these paints will be touch dry in 4-6 hours and ready for you to apply a second coat in 16-24 hours. It's probably even more important to sit on your hands and remain patient with these paints before your second coat because they're much more prone to pulling.
Matte Paint: 30 minutes to an hour for drying and 1-2 hours before applying the second coat. Eggshell paint: 1 hour to dry and 2 hours before applying the second coat. It's important to know what type of paint you have before applying. This way you know the proper wait times to get an amazing finished product.

Water Based Primer is essential for use on all MDF and woods rich in active substances prior to application of water based eggshell or water based gloss paint.
However, if satin or eggshell is used, those spots generally cannot be touched up, so the entire wall has to be repainted. This is not cost-effective for the general contractor, the painters, or the homeowner. Therefore, builders use low-grade flat paint we painters refer to as builder-grade flat.
Patchiness usually happens if you don't use enough paint, or apply it unevenly. Using a touch more paint, and painting in small sections one at a time, usually does the trick. Also, rolling in a grid fashion will get you an even finish too. But, sometimes, changes in the gloss level leave things patchy.
Eggshell Finish
"It is the easiest paint to wipe clean and is great for all areas of the home, including bathrooms and kitchens," she says. "I only use a gloss or semi-gloss paint on base, case, trim, and cabinetry."
Patchy paint can result if paint has been applied unevenly. Patchy paint can be down to a variation in surface absorption. Walls might appear patchy if they have variation in texture. Using paint that is not fully mixed can cause a patchy appearance.
