The type of lubricant you use is important. Most ceiling fans require a light machine oil or electric motor oil. Avoid using WD-40 or other penetrating oils, as these can actually damage the motor over time. Look for the oil ports on the motor — these are small holes typically located near the top of the motor housing.
The best fan lubricant depends on the type of fan, but experts generally recommend using a non-detergent electric motor oil (like SAE 10 or SAE 20) or a specialized 100%-synthetic lubricant. Never use standard household oils (which leave a sticky, gummy residue) or penetrating sprays like WD-40, which dissolve existing grease and will ruin the motor over time.
Don't Keep Your Heat Pump Running When You Don't Need It. Many people leave their heat pump running even when they're not home, thinking it's more efficient than turning it off. But running your heat pump unnecessarily can waste energy and lead to higher utility bills.
There are two entirely different HVAC concepts known as the "20-degree rule" for heat pumps. The reality is that it's usually not a good idea to simply keep a heat pump operating all through the night while you're asleep. Instead, you should make sure that you have a programmable thermostat and set it to have it lower the indoor temperatures by 8° to 10°F when people are asleep.
