Replacing the crank mechanism is simple. But finding a new crank may take some time. You can mail your old crank to some replacement hardware specialists and you'll get back a match (Photo 1). The cranks can be expensive, but they may be a bargain if the overall condition of the window is still good.
Perhaps it is a bay, casement or awning style UPVC window that it difficult or stiff to close. This is due to the swelling of the UPVC frame caused by hot temperatures. In this case, your UPVC window is not broken and does not need replacing – the window will simply retract when the temperature has returned to normal.
Answer: Your window needs new hinges. The interlocking part on the hinge is worn down and not closing the window against the seal. Be sure to change both hinges and not just the faulty one because if you don't, your sash will not run smoothly and will only cause your hinges to fail again.
Operate by placing the crank handle on the crank stud with the handle pointing upward in the 12 o'clock position. Manually rotate the crank handle clockwise (to the right) until the window opens to the desired position. Rotate crank handle in a counterclockwise direction or to the left to close the window.
To unlock this type of window from the outside: Find out if the window is open and push it with your hands. If this doesn't work, place a prybar between the window and the windowsill. Jiggle the window a little, and it will move and be able to slide or come off.
Awning windows can be opened even when it's raining. The window opens outwards from the top hinge and lets in ventilation at the bottom of the sash, without the threat of water entering the home. Awning windows can be grouped together with other windows.
The window lift on most cars uses a linkage to lift the window glass while keeping it level. A small electric motor is attached to a worm gear and several other spur gears to create a large gear reduction, giving it enough torque to lift and lower the window.
What is an Awning Window? An awning window has hinges at the top of the frame, and swings outward from the bottom. They can open with the simple crank of a handle or with the basic glide of the Easy-Slide Operator hardware. Awning windows are great in places that could use extra ventilation and light.
To open a window from the outside, first determine the window type. If it's a locked or latched casement window, you may need to prize it open with a crowbar. With vertical sash windows, a knife run between the sashes may unlatch it or break the latch. Sliding windows can be prized from their frame.
Opening a Stuck Sash Lock Window
Wedge the blade of a putty knife between the sash and the frame. Tap the end of the knife lightly with a hammer. Repeat around the window between the sash and frame. If the window still will not open, proceed to the next step.
The frame on a casement window is tightly sealed when it's closed and latched. Casement windows can only be opened from the inside. A casement window cannot be forced open from the outside, even with the help of a crowbar.
The first thing to do is carefully remove the glass from the uPVC window. Next, close the sash and ensure that it is lined up with the frame. Re-install the glass into the sash and pack it all the way round the frame so that there is no movement at all between the glass and the sash.
Turn the wrench clockwise or counterclockwise to move the lock backwards or forwards. Turning the wrench clockwise will move the lock backwards (farther out from the lock mechanism) and increase the pressure exerted on the window when locked. This will improve the seal and stop any drafts.
Casement windows are generally hard to break into. When closed, and latched the seal is very tight and the only way to open it would be to break the glass. Easier to break into. The latch of double-hung windows is used to close the window, and not for security purposes.
A traditional sliding sash window is opened by unlocking the window catch, so it is left in the open position. You can find this on the top of the sash. You then press upwards with the palm of your hands to separate the sash from the windowsill.
Find the place where the door or window locks. Clean the line of knife and try to open the latch by passing the latch inside. Slide the knife between the door and the frame of the door. Slide until you touch the bolt.

Sliding Window
Often referred to as a slider or gliding windows, sliding windows have sashes that slide either left or right in a single frame. A two-lite sliding window has two independent sashes that slide horizontally.
