Mortar does two things: it helps support the tub to make it feel much more robust and it affords you an opportunity to ensure that it is properly leveled. You need a mortar that won't 'slump'. Something like deck mud is more like wet beach sand will work.
Put some silicone underneath. Make sure the silicone contacts the floor, the trim, and the tub. Also make sure you use 100% silicone that is water and mildew resistant. Use blobs of hot glue on the outside of the trim piece to hold it until the silicone dries, you can peel the hot glue off later.

Mix the mortar so that it can support the tub. It should not be runny but rather stand up on it's own. Pour the mortar on the subfloor so that it's a few inches from the drain opening. The mortar should be evened out and about 2 inches thick on all sides.

We really care about stopping water penetration into unwanted areas and so should you! Is it cheaper to NOT support a bath in this manner? In the short term, yes of course it is, as banging in the bath in 10 minutes takes no labour, materials or comparative effort. In the long term, definitely not!
