Another effective way to tone down the golden oak is by adding throw pillows in a mix of black, deep charcoal, white, and light ivory. Layering these colours adds texture and richness, creating a sophisticated palette that complements the oak. A black and white patterned rug can also be very effective.
You could put glass fronts in several of the upper cabinets so it is not so much honey oak. paint and new hardware! I put glass fronts on some of my cabinets and also had the back of them tiled to match the backsplash. Painting them would also work, but I had the same cabinetry throughout the house.
If you want to downplay the honey oak, stay away from colors on the opposite side of the color wheel - blues & greens (and grey too). They will make the honey oak ``pop''. As Debbi said, stick to warm tones of cream. I would paint the walls, replace the flooring, and update the pulls and ceiling fixture.
What are some DIY methods to lighten orange oak cabinets? Use liming wax on the cabinets. Work in small sections. Once it sets, don't go over it or it'll be patchy. Use Cabinet Staining bundle. A: Honey would be closest to the natural wood color. The Golden has a yellowish/orange tint but still close to the natural wood color and Red oak is much darker and a brownish red. Helpful?
Our review, Bona Red Out is a great product but it's not going to help minimize the red and pink hues but it's not 100%. We do like the product and will plan on continuing to use it as it does lighten up the look and works well with our current finish systems.
Oak takes a stain very well and we can stain from a light color all the way up to dark colors, as you can see us using in the photo below… 2) they have natural oils in them that can make them extremely hard to get a consistent, even look.
Most finishes exacerbate the problem leaving wood which ages to a "cigarette yellow" tone. The best way to create a pale bleached effect is to treat with a thin coat of diluted White Wood Dye after sanding. Once dry seal in with Finney s Trade Acrylic Varnish which enhances the bleached look of the stain.
Probably a water based top coat as oils based will add more orange/yellow tones over time. Once you have a plan, decide if it's worth sanding everything. It will be a large job. Also understand that removing the base stain might make the wood look worse.
