Washing machines can be negatively impacted by hard water just like dishwashers can. Hard water minerals can buildup in the wash tub, pump mechanisms and other areas you can't see, damaging these mechanisms and leading to costly repairs.
Add a quarter cup of vinegar to each load to help cut the minerals and prevent them from building up. Every now and then, run an empty load with hot water and 1-3 cups of vinegar.

Permanent Hardness of Water
We can remove this hardness by treating the water with washing soda. Insoluble carbonates are formed when washing soda reacts with the sulphide and chloride salts of magnesium and calcium, and thus, hard water is converted to soft water.
Naturally lower your aquarium hardness by soaking dechlorinated tap water in peat moss, Indian almond leaves or driftwood. A more precise method would be to dilute tap water with reverse osmosis (RO) or distilled water or to use remineralized RO water.
Soften your kitchen water by boiling: Boiling will make the salts in water sink to the bottom of the boiler. You can then scoop out this water or pour the water in another pot leaving the deposits in the end. Install an ion-exchange filter to your kitchen faucet or use a water pitcher filter.
Baking soda – While adding baking soda to your bath won't chemically soften the water, it will make it feel slicker and cause your skin to feel softer. To try this method, add ½ a cup of baking soda to a tubful of water and soak in the bath for about 15 minutes.
Use Dawn and some hot water and a cloth or sponge to get into those nooks and crannies where grime and scale tend to build up. You can also combine Dawn with vinegar for stronger cleaning power, especially when tackling hard water stains.
Using vinegar in the washing machine is fine, so long as you don't overdo it. If you start adding huge amounts of vinegar to your loads every single day, then the seals and hoses on your washing machine will start to perish.
Set your washing machine to the highest and hottest water setting. Add in four cups of white vinegar, and start a cycle. Once the washing machine is filled up and barely started, pause it and allow the water and white vinegar to soak the drum for an hour.
