To reset your ice maker, pull out the ice bucket and locate the flush Test/Reset button (typically found on the side or bottom front). Press and hold it for 3–5 seconds until you hear a chime or feel the unit vibrate. The ice maker will then cycle and refill.
General Ice Maker Reset Steps
Make sure “water” or “ice” has been selected. Also make sure the water supply is properly connected to a cold water supply and the water shutoff valve is fully opened. If the issue is ice, make sure the ice maker is turned on and the ice storage bin is properly in place.
Why is my ice maker not making ice? Make sure the freezer temperature is low enough to make ice, there is water connected and the icemaker is turned ON. On top mount freezer units, make sure the Ice Sensor Arm is switched to the ON position which is DOWN.
You may have to wait up to 24 hours after resetting before your appliance starts making ice again. Then, ice makers will produce 2 trays of ice every 3 hours.
Possible solutions
You can disconnect your fridge from its power source by removing the power cord from the wall outlet or by flipping the correct circuit breaker in the breaker panel. There may be whooshing or knocking noises, which is normal. Remain unplugged for 10 minutes. Plug the refrigerator in or turn on the circuit breaker.
Ice maker is not working or not making enough ice
Full operation can sometimes be restored through a power reset by either unplugging the appliance's power cord for a few minutes and then plugging it back in or switching off the circuit breaker for the refrigerator then switching it back on.
Common causes include:
Dirty or clogged water filter. Incorrect freezer temperature. Faulty ice maker module or thermostat. Airflow blockage inside freezer.
The compressor, coils and control board are the most expensive repairs. Your fridge's brand, model and size, plus your location, will impact repair costs. If your refrigerator is more than 6 years old and it will cost you more than half its original price to repair it, consider replacing it instead.
To reset your ice maker: Remove your ice bucket so you can get to your ice maker. Locate the test button. It's a rectangular button near the front of the ice maker, on the side or bottom.
The most common issues with refrigerators include incorrect or inconsistent temperature, moisture inside the appliance, and water dispenser or ice maker problems. These issues might be resolved by adjusting the temperature settings, checking the door seal, or calling in a professional for help.
Remove your fridge's power cord from the outlet. Keep the appliance unplugged for about five to ten minutes. The reset won't work if you re-plug the power cord too quickly.
If your fridge has a manual dial with numbers from 1 to 5, it's helpful to know how that scale works. Usually, “1” is the warmest setting, while “5” is the coldest.
A partially clogged filter could cause water to come out very slowly at the water dispenser, but not be enough to fill the icemaker. An icemaker sends a signal to the water valve to fill with water. Most icemakers are on a timed system, so if there's slow water to the icemaker, it may not fill enough, or at all.
The average lifespan of an ice maker is 5 years.
So, if it's been around five years since you've had your ice machine, here are five of the top signs that it's time for a replacement and how Emergency Ice can help with ice delivery services.
