To determine if your PEX fittings are bad, inspect exposed joints for moisture, crusty green/white corrosion, or cracked plastic. Look for crimp rings that are unevenly squeezed, tilted, or biting into the pipe. Listen for sudden drops in water pressure, or unusual "plastic" odors.
Plastic PEX fittings are made from durable polymers but can degrade when exposed to certain chemicals, adhesives, or ultraviolet light. Using fittings that are incompatible with the specific PEX type being installed often leads to seal failure.
Leaks and Fittings Issues
PEX plumbing uses fittings and connectors that are typically made of plastic or metal. Over time, these fittings can loosen, leading to leaks. Problems can arise with crimp rings, as improper use of a crimping tool can weaken the joints.
One of the most common issues with PEX fittings is leaking. This can be caused by improper installation, damaged fittings, or incorrect use of the fittings. Solution: Ensure that the fittings are installed correctly and tightened to the recommended torque.
If it has been installed correctly in normal conditions, it is found that PEX expansion connections can last for 50 years or even more. Like any high-quality plumbing material, PEX has a relatively long life span, allowing it to compete well in today's market.
PEX pipe is more durable than rigid pipe in cold weather but is still susceptible to burst in extreme conditions. To ensure your PEX lasts through extreme weather, insulate your pipes or use our other tips to keep your pipes at an appropriate temperature.
PMRs for malignancies of the stomach, kidney, brain, and lymphopoietic system were also elevated, especially among plumbers. Chronic rheumatic heart disease, emphysema, liver cirrhosis, and all external causes of death were the major non-cancer causes with significantly elevated PMRs.
The quality of water running through PEX pipes can also affect their longevity. Hard water, which contains high levels of minerals, can cause buildup and potentially damage the pipes over time. Regular water softening treatments can help mitigate this issue.
The 135 rule means horizontal drain pipes cannot connect using a fitting that creates more than a 135-degree change in direction. In plain terms, you cannot use a standard short-turn 90-degree elbow between two horizontal drain lines. Plumbers use two 45-degree elbows, a long-sweep 90, or a wye-and-eighth-bend instead.
Other causes of problems and failures:
PEX pipe is more resistant to bursting in freezing conditions than metal piping. Because it's flexible, PEX tubing expands rather than splitting, minimizing costly repairs. A long product lifespan reduces cost associated with it, increases customer satisfaction and lessens waste.
Rodents, particularly rats and mice, are known to chew through PEX plumbing. Because the material is soft and easy to gnaw, even a small rodent problem can lead to leaks, water damage, and costly repairs hidden inside walls or under floors.
PEX a is made using the peroxide, or Engel, method. PEX b is formed using silane, or moisture cure, method. This is the most common PEX pipe type out there. PEX c is created using the electronic irradiation, or cold, method of cross-linking.
PEX pipes are designed to be flexible, which makes them less prone to burst than rigid pipes. However, if the pipes are exposed to extreme temperatures or pressure, they can still burst. Pipe bursting can result in significant water damage and can be expensive to repair.
To fix a minor leak in a PEX system, you can try tightening the fitting, adding more Teflon tape or pipe dope to the threads, or replacing the fitting entirely if the leak persists. "Tighten the Fitting: If you haven't already, try tightening the fitting a bit more.
Plastic fittings work well in standard domestic projects, from installing a water filtration system to fixing a leak under a sink. Brass PEX fittings provide better overall strength and durability, especially for high-pressure or high-temperature applications.
It is Easier to Remove Pinch Clamps than Crimps
But why not take the little bit of insurance right now to make doing so easier? In order to remove a copper crimp ring from a PEX connection, you must cut the PEX pipe off close to the fitting. Then use a specialized ring cutting tool to cut the copper ring in half.
Every installed fitting and elbow creates possible leak points throughout the system. Implementing pipe-bending practices instead of fittings reduces the number of connection joints, helping decrease system vulnerabilities throughout its lifespan.
GRADIENT. The traditional rule of thumb of 1:40 for a 100mm drain and 1:60 for a 150mm drain remains good practice - however, with careful laying a 100mm pipe with at least one WC connected can have a gradient of 1:80 and a 150mm with 5 WCs connected can have a minimum gradient of 1:150.
Drain→p-trap→vent→pipe to sewer. The vent prevents a flushing toilet from creating suction that would suck the water out of the trap, which lets gasses in. You really should have a vent on every drain.
a waste pipe must be layed so it has a fall of 1 in 4 (mcguires rule).
However, recent failures and the lawsuits that have followed those failures lead to the idea that PEX plumbing systems aren't as good as once assumed. PEX systems can fail in either the pipe or in the fitting. The most notable failure occurs when the fittings fail and water starts leaking and causing visible damage.
Look for markings or labeling on the pipe
Looking at the marking is one of the easiest ways to identify PEX pipes since most manufacturers label them for this purpose. Usually, there are markings/printing on the exterior of PEX tubing that clearly says “PEX A” or “PEX B,” indicating the type of PEX tubing you have.
With PEX, UV light exposure destroys the material's chlorine-inhibitors, leaving the pipe more vulnerable to chlorine degradation and may significantly reduce the service life of the piping.
