One sign of overwatered tomato plants is drooping stems and foliage. Wilting occurs when the soil holds more moisture than the roots can take up but it can also mean the soil is too dry and the plants need water.
Insert your finger into the soil near the base of the plant. If the soil feels consistently soggy or waterlogged, it's a sign of overwatering. Additionally, observe the condition of the tomato plants. If the leaves appear wilted, yellow, or have brown spots, it could indicate overwatering.
Consistent Watering: During the early stages of growth and fruit development, tomatoes need consistent moisture. Aim to water deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth. This typically means watering once every 1-2 weeks, depending on rainfall and temperature.
Tomato plants can fully recover from overwatering if you take action as soon as you spot the signs. To save your tomato plant, remove it from the soil using a garden fork or trowel. Next, clear as much dirt away from the soil as possible, using your hands or running the root system under the faucet.
Ripening Fruit
Starting in mid-August, blossoms on large-fruited varieties will not mature and ripen before the end of the season. Remove blossoms and small fruit to encourage ripening of the remaining tomatoes. Reduce or stop watering about mid- to late-August to stress the plant and encourage ripening.
Overwatering tomatoes can lead to yellow and spotted leaves, while underwatering results in wilt and diseased fruit.
The good news is that most plants will bounce back between 7-14 days if they're given proper care (which includes rehydration). If this isn't possible because major damage was done or little healthy root system exists then expect about 2 weeks until improvement can be seen.
Avoid plants with yellowing or wilted leaves, as these may indicate nutrient deficiencies or disease. Inspect the stems for any signs of damage or discoloration, as healthy tomato plants should have strong, upright stems.
When nitrogen is deficient leaves are small and pale green to yellow in color. Symptoms are first seen in the old leaves and gradually progress to new growth. The plant appears thin and upright. With severe deficiency the old leaves become completely yellow or turn brown before dropping from the plant.
Tomatoes can grow in a temperature range from 10 to 35°C but grow best between 20 and 30°C. In a heatwave plants will transpire more, blossoms won't open and pollen will be destroyed, leaves will curl and fruit will not set until temperatures drop.
Is it possible to overcome tomato wilt? The answer to this is, if it's caused by an environmental factor – yes, you can recover your plant. However, if the plant is wilting because of a pathogen, it is unfortunately, almost always necessary to uproot and destroy the plant.
Some growers prefer to use a high-phosphorus fertilizer, indicated by a larger middle number. You can also keep things simple with a fertilizer especially formulated for tomatoes – usually with a ratio like 3-4-6 or 4-7-10. Most importantly, don't over-fertilize. Too little fertilizer is always better than too much.
Bacterial wilt disease is most commonly found on tomatoes, although other solanaceous plants such as potato, pepper, and eggplant also may be infected. The first symptom is a sudden and permanent wilting of the leaves, even when there is adequate soil moisture (Figure 18).
Over-watering.
Leaves might yellow and wither, or they could curl.
If a plant is overwatered, it will likely develop yellow or brown limp, droopy leaves as opposed to dry, crispy leaves (which are a sign of too little water). Wilting leaves combined with wet soil usually mean that root rot has set in and the roots can no longer absorb water.
How to check for root rot. The main signs to look out for are: yellowing, wilting leaves, wet soil that isn't drying, black, wet roots, quickly declining health, and stunted growth.
Overwatering means yellowing leaves, a general feeling of flop (science calls it wilting!), fuzzy soil, and a pot that feels like it could double as a weight. Underwatering shows itself with crispy leaves, that same sad droop, and bone-dry soil.
The biggest difference between the two is that too little water will result in your plant's leaves feeling dry and crispy to the touch while too much water results in soft and limp leaves. Water pressure begins to build in the cells of plant leaves when the roots absorb more water than they can use.
Tomatoes growing in pots have high water needs. The relatively small soil volume in the container limits the amount of water available to plants. During the heat of summer, container-grown tomatoes often need to be watered daily. Hot, windy conditions might require twice daily watering.
Vine crops are heavy water feeders, so you should constantly check soil moisture. Cucumbers need about one inch of water from rainfall or irrigation each week during the growing season. Always soak the soil thoroughly when watering. Water sandy soils more often, but with lower amounts applied at any one time.
Pruning tomato plants in the morning after dew or overnight rain has dried off the foliage is best. It helps to prevent the spreading of plant diseases.
