Most people know that TSP is a powerful cleaner and degreaser, but they may not know the things that TSP should not be used for. Because of its high alkalinity, TSP can etch glass, mirrors, and ceramic tiles. It also eats away at the grout and should not be used for general cleaning on painted wood and metals.
TSP is an alkaline cleaner/degreaser that is known to remove gloss, at least on gloss and/or lead household paints. One should always be careful, but the potential always exists, especially on more complex seals and rubber parts, like on a convertible, to get it on the paint.
Many states/ local governments outlawed true TSP as it was a problem in the downstream runoff, as the phosphates cause algae blooms in ponds and lakes.

Dawn: You can use the original blue Dawn dish detergent instead of TSP to cut through surface grease. Pressure-washing: This is another alternative to cleaning outside surfaces without TSP. With sufficient and well-calibrated water pressure, it is possible to clean tough areas with only the pressure of the water.
TSP is commonly used in cleaning products to dissolve and remove oily residues from surfaces such as walls, floors, and kitchen appliances. TSP can be effective for stripping glossy paint from surfaces.
Although it is still the active ingredient in some toilet bowl-cleaning tablets, TSP is generally not recommended for cleaning bathrooms because it can stain metal fixtures and can damage grout.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved TSP as an ingredient in toothpaste and an additive to processed foods like breakfast cereal. Yet since 2010, TSP has been banned in certain areas because phosphate runoff harms vegetation and pollutes rivers and other waterways.
