Sugar soap should always be rinsed off when using for general cleaning where you are not painting the surface. Please note that YOU MUST wipe off Selleys Sugar Soap immediately from aluminium and brass surfaces.

So we advise against the use of Sugar Soap as it can leave a film over the wall, creating a surface that the paint cannot stick to. In some circumstances the paint can slide around on the surface and even peel away. Sugar soap can also leave a fine coating of sugar that may repel the paint leaving it patchy.
Ingestion No harmful effects expected from quantities likely to be ingested by accident. Skin contact May cause defatting of the skin but is not an irritant. Repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking. Prolonged or repeated contact may dry skin and cause irritation.
To use Sugar Soap, simply dilute it in warm water. Using a sponge, wash the required surface with the soapy liquid. Once the entire area has been washed go over it again with clean fresh warm water, in order to rinse off the sugar soap and remove the remaining dirt or grease.
For larger cracks and holes, start by removing any grease, dust and flaking plaster from the surrounding area, and the edges of the hole, by washing with sugar soap. Wear protective gloves and goggles whilst using this product.

Sugar soap alternatives
If you want to use a natural sugar soap alternative, use the Auro 411 Plant Soap.
Whilst Selleys Original Sugar Soap will clean off visible mould, it does not kill the mould spores and therefore if conditions are conducive to mould growth the mould may return. To help prevent this you can use a bleach or white vinegar solution after cleaning to kill any existing mould spores on the surfaces.
Some advantages of using sugar soap or lacquer thinners to clean the furniture item are: - They are effective at removing dirt, wax, grease and grime from various surfaces. - They do not damage or discolor most types of paints.
Selleys Sugar Soap does not need to be rinsed off from the surface if you are repainting although it is still good practice to wipe over each area as you go with a clean damp cloth, particularly if the surfaces were badly soiled such as nicotine stains, heavy grease and dirt buildup etc.
Sugar soap is a great all round degreaser and cleaner and ideal for most DIY projects. Use it to clean painted walls, when painting over textured wallpaper and painting gloss kitchen cabinets, plus many other jobs around the home.
If the ceiling is flat painted, a quick rub over with 100 grit drywall sandpaper will help to cut through years of dirt and neglect – after all, who washes their ceiling? Follow that with a wash down with sugar soap and water and you're ready to go.
After you've sudsed with soap and water, you need to carefully make sure that you rinse away all the residue. If you leave residue behind, you're potentially leaving germs behind, too.
