The Rust-Oleum 12 oz. Specialty Plastic Primer Spray can be applied directly to a variety of plastics such as mailboxes, lawn chairs and storage lockers.
DESCRIPTION AND USES
These sprays are ideal for use on polypropylene, polystyrene, resin, PVC, fiberglass, and vinyl plastics such as chairs, tables, and planters. TIP: Some plastics made of polyethylene such as plastic storage containers are manufactured in a way that may hinder maximum paint adhesion.
Our experts highly recommend Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 which is a universal interior & exterior water-based primer that offers fantastic adhesion to any surface it is applied to, including very smooth surfaces like plastic.
Rust-Oleum Universal and 2X Ultra Cover spray paints are both designed for use on plastic.

“The best way to apply spray paint to a plastic surface is to always clean first and then lightly sand the piece if there are loose debris. Then, use Krylon Fusion All-In-One spray paint for the best adhesion!”
An all-purpose primer which specifies it is suitable for plastic should work fine, however it is always advised that you refer to the manufacturer instructions before starting your project. Here are some of the primers we stock at The Paint Shed which are suitable for plastic surfaces: Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 primer.
Most plastics generally present problems when trying to paint directly onto them. That's why you'll often need a plastic primer: a clear product that serves as a base layer that you can effectively paint afterwards.
This spray primer can be used on almost any surface, including wood, plastic and metal, making it ideal for smaller DIY projects. Another option for metal surfaces is Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Clean Metal Primer, which creates a corrosion-resistant barrier for greater rust prevention.
This water-based primer and sealer can be used on interior and exterior surfaces before painting. It dries fast and helps prevent rust, mold and mildew. Use Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 before you paint to hide dark marks, stains and more.
Commercial Universal Acrylic Primer is a flat, DTM corrosion resistant primer that has been developed to accept a wide variety of topcoats including acrylics, alkyds and high performance coatings.
Rust-Oleum® Paint For Plastic renews and revitalizes automotive grade indoor and outdoor plastics. For use on: Automotive plastics, polypropylene, polystyrene, resin, PVC, fiberglass, and vinyl plastics such as chairs, tables, and planters.
SURFACE PREPARATION
Remove loose paint, dirt and rust with a wire brush or sandpaper. Wipe the entire area with Rust-Oleum Wax & Tar Remover and a clean lint-free cloth to remove any dirt, grease, wax etc. Scuff-sand and feather edge the entire surface with 1,000 grit sandpaper, Scotch Brite pad or equivalent.
Dry and recoat times are based on 70°F (21°C) and 50% relative humidity. Allow more time at cooler temperatures. Dries to the touch in 15-30 minutes and dries to handle in 1-2 hours and is fully dry in 48 hours. Apply a second coat or top coat within 1 hour or after 48 hours.
Standard exterior gloss paint is a suitable finish for plastic when used in conjunction with an appropriate primer and undercoat. Either acrylic or oil-based gloss can be used, and both are available in a wide range of colours. Typical application methods include brush, roller and spray.
However, if you're using regular spray paint, then you will want to prime the plastic first. How do you paint plastic so it doesn't peel? Using a plastic primer before paint application can prevent the paint from peeling, especially if the paint is not designed for plastic.
If painting interior plastics, apply a high-adhesion latex stain-blocking primer. For outdoor plastics, spray-prime with specialized primers formulated specifically for adhesion to plastics.
Rust-Oleum® Acrylic Enamel 2X is designed on average to provide twice the coverage on metal, most plastic and wood compared to competitive general purpose spray paints. This general purpose paint covers with less spray passes which allows projects to be completed faster and easier.
For new plastic surfaces, thoroughly wipe down surface with paint thinner to promote adhesion. For aged or weathered surfaces, remove loose material with a brush or scraper, clean with soap and water, rinse and let dry. Sanding may be required for glossy or smooth surfaces.
Plastic Surfaces
No need for paint strippers or solvents for plastic. Rubbing alcohol and even non-acetone nail polish remover will remove spray paint.
