Expanded polystyrene foam boards are made with air bubbles that stop heat transfer. Unfortunately, those same air bubbles collect moisture which leads to mold and mildew growth. Solution: Rigid foam board insulation products are actually made to be water resistant.
Foam is ideal for offering natural air cushioning, insulation and sound absorption under flooring, but can be a prime spot for unseen fungal growth.
Cons of a Foamboard
Foamboards can get discolored, disintegrated or warped if left under the sun or rain. It can be used for a short outdoor event and not as a permanent outdoor display. Also keep it away from your bathroom or kitchen as steam can create moisture, affecting the foamboard.
Nonporous materials such as plastic, metal, and glass are less likely to support mold growth but may do so if organic material is available in the dust or dirt coating these materials. Uncoated masonry is also less likely to support mold growth but may do so under special conditions.
Mold-Resistant Flooring
Options such as porcelain tile, vinyl plank, and engineered wood are highly recommended by Buffalo Restoration for their durability and resistance to moisture. These materials are easy to clean and maintain, making them ideal for areas susceptible to water exposure.
While the surface of the foam board has a protective coating, we don't recommend exposing the foam boards to moisture. Foam boards are not waterproof and can absorb water, which may lead to damage over time.
The lifespan of PVC foam board can vary depending on the quality of the material and the environment it is exposed to. High-quality PVC foam board that is properly installed or maintained can last up to 20 years or more in construction applications and up to 5 years or more in outdoor signage applications.
More effective insulation
With R-values ranging from 3.6 to 8.0, rigid foam sheathing has much better insulation per inch than other materials (i.e. plywood has an R-value of 1.25 and fiberglass batts have an R-value of 3.14).
Mix equal amounts of rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) and warm water in a disposable container. Dip a cloth into it, wring it out, and use this wet cloth to scrub the mouldy area of the mattress. Use a circular motion when scrubbing, and go well beyond the area of visible mould.
