KILZ PRIMER
KILZ is a great solution for medium to severe odors, including those from pets. PLEASE NOTE: We use Kilz to seal your floor and prevent odors on the FLOOR. Odors can also be held in the walls, ceiling, and duct work, which will require you to take other measures to remove.
KILZ RESTORATION® Primer (Formerly KILZ MAX) is a new generation water-based primer, sealer and stainblocker offering performance of traditional oil and shellac-based primers. It tackles tough stains including heavy water damage, rust, smoke, nicotine, grease, tannin, ink, pencil, felt marker, pet stains and more.
Usually one coat of Kilz will be enough to cover any texture issues, stains, previous colors, and odors.
Precautionary Statements: DO NOT use this product unless you can achieve cross-ventilation by opening windows and doors during application and drying or use the product outdoors. Do not spray on an open flame or other ignition source.
Zinsser Mold Killing Primer is a water-based EPA registered fungicidal protective coating that can be used to paint over and kill all existing mold, mildew, moss, fungi, odor causing bacteria and any other fungal organisms.
Use undiluted white vinegar on hard surfaces in kitchens and baths. A bleach solution also works to kill mold. Mix one cup of bleach in a gallon of water, apply to the surface and don't rinse. Mix a 50/50 solution of ammonia and water.
Dries to the touch in 30 minutes. Can be recoated or topcoated in one hour with latex or oil-based paint. Application at lower temperatures, in high humidity or in poorly ventilated areas will affect dry time.
Though the name itself is misleading, KILZ paint and primers do not actually 'kill' mold. But it will prevent mold. The brand does well to kill a stain's ability to show through the final coat of paint by sealing over the stained surface with an impermeable interior barrier.
Moisture mitigating primers are specifically designed to reduce or eliminate the amount of moisture which can penetrate through the pores of the concrete. The primer acts as a shield to protect the resinous flooring system.
Car paint primer acts as a bonding agent to help the paint adhere more strongly to the body of the vehicle. Equally as important, auto paint primer helps prevent rust and moisture damage to your vehicle by adding a couple of extra protective layers.
Temperatures above 90°F may affect the application such as drying too fast. Avoid painting in direct sun. Shelf life under normal conditions is two years unopened.
Surface Preparation
All surfaces must be clean of grease and oil before applying KILZ®. To remove grease proper degreaser products can be used.
Once you've assessed your stain type and procured the proper primer, it's time to prepare the surface for stain elimination! Ensure that the surface is clean and free of dust, wipe down with a damp cloth if needed and allow to dry. You're now ready to apply primer over the stain using a brush or roller.
Even if you paint over mold with Kilz, it will not kill the mold so the mold can still cause you health problems and damage your property.
You will want to use 2-3 coats of primer to ensure there is a good bond between the new paint and the wall, and also to cover up any previous colors, especially if they are red, orange, or a strange outdated color. In short, you will typically need 2 coats of primer for most painting projects.
Using too much primer may make your skin slippery and oily, especially if you're using a product containing silicones or hydrating ingredients. Be careful with colour-correcting primers, focusing on areas of discolouration. If you use too much of a green primer, you may look sickly.
Depending on how strong or bold the previous color is, it may be necessary to apply more than one coat of primer. However, it is not necessary to over apply the primer with so many coats. As long as the primer applies uniformly over the previous color, then one or two coats should be sufficient.
Norris recommends painting over the cat pee stains with a primer like KILZ that helps seal in odors. If the stain is not painted over, the smell might come back even when you lay down new carpet.

Zinsser primer is an overall superior paint since it's stronger, more receptive to paint, and better at preventing bleed-through and mold, yet it's only a few dollars more than the Kilz mold-killing latex paint primer.
