Hydrogen peroxide (3%) mixed with water is often the cheapest and most effective solution for animal urine cleaning. Simply moisten the rag or soft absorbent cloth like felt and apply to the spot. Allow the rag to sit or few hours to thoroughly remove the urine stain and odor from the hardwood floors.
This product is the number one ruiner of floors that we come across. Bona Polish is NOT a hardwood floor cleaner. It is a cheap thin finish that you apply to your floors. Over time and repeated use the film gets thicker and it scuffs and scratches easily making the floors look unsightly.
To begin, use 3% hydrogen peroxide. Using anything stronger could harm your wood floor when trying to get rid of urine. Pour some of it directly onto the stained area and let it soak for about an hour or two depending on stain severity.
White vinegar works to neutralize the ammonia in urine, and it's also a deodorizer. The typical recommended mixture contains 1/4 cup vinegar to 1 gallon of warm water. You can use this mixture on many others surfaces throughout your home in addition to hardwood floors—even for messes your pet didn't make.
Hydrogen peroxide can potentially damage wood floors if it's used improperly. High concentrations of it can bleach the wood, resulting in discoloration.
There is no need to rinse after. It really helps maintain the floors.
Too much cleaning product used
This will often leave floors sticky. When you use too much cleaner, the excess creates a soapy residue that is sticky to the feet especially when you've not done enough rinsing. To tackle this potential cause of sticky floors: Try to follow the instructions on the label.
Suitable for Hardwood Floors: Bona is often recommended for hardwood floors, as it's gentle on the finish while still providing effective cleaning.
If the urine sat long enough and caused a stain, try hydrogen peroxide and a rag. White vinegar and water are an excellent wash for removing urine from wood floors as well. If these don't work, the oxalic acid mixture should be the next step. If there is lingering odor, try baking soda.
Most urine stains can be cleaned either with a homemade vinegar cleaner, or a homemade hydrogen peroxide cleaner.
You can start by sprinkling baking soda on the area. It will help absorb moisture and neutralize the odor. You might need to leave it on overnight. The following day, vacuum the baking soda to help eliminate the urine smell.
Are Bona Floor Cleaners safer for use around pets? Yes. Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaners and Bona Hard-Surface Floor Cleaners are formulated without the use of harsh chemicals, and instead use waterbased, and biobased ingredients that won't harm your furry friends.
I could not be happier with the final result and the darker, richer color. I was so impressed by Bona's dustless containment system, how fast it dried (in way less than 24 hours!), and the lack of smell!
Dirt particles can act like sandpaper, and will wear floors down over time. Bona recommends implementing a “daily, weekly, monthly/bi-monthly” cleaning routine. When it comes to polishing hardwood floors, Bona's specially-formulated hardwood floor polish can be used several times a year.
Bona cleaners won't dull your floors or leave behind any residue. Find the perfect products to clean, shine and protect your floors.
Dry mop, sweep or vacuum (use a soft brush) to remove loose grit or dirt. Mist the product in small quantities on the surface and use the mop to spread it. Mop lengthwise of the wood. Leave the floor to try for around ten minutes after the application.
Your wood floors may still look dirty after mopping due to a few common issues. One key factor could be a dirty mop that isn't properly cleaned between rounds, as it won't pick up new dirt effectively.
The floor will take light foot traffic approximately 8 hours after the final application and may be put into full use after 24 hours. Allow the surface to dry for at least 3 days before using carpets or other floor coverings.
Just please don't use them to clean wood floors. Using vinegar and water as a homemade wood floor cleaning solution can have a negative effect on your wood floor. Since vinegar is an acid, it will break down the finish on the surface of your floor, and over time it will reduce the shine, and leave a dull appearance.
Deep Stains on Wooden Floors
Hydrogen peroxide is known for its effectiveness against dark and black urine stains. Apply it to a clean cloth and lay it over the stain, allowing it to sit and work on lifting the stain.
And a quick Google search reveals that a lot of people still recommend using it. But vinegar should not be used as a hardwood floor cleaner because its acidity can lead to etching in the wood's surface. Avoid ammonia – Ammonia will discolor, deteriorate, and dull the finish.
Create a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle. Spray the vinegar solution liberally over the affected area of wood flooring and allow it to soak for 5-10 minutes. Vinegar helps neutralize odors and prepares the wood for drawing out remaining urine that has soaked deeper into the grain.
