However before you lay down any paving slabs, you should consider a patio drainage system. By ensuring the removal of standing water from a patio (which can happen as a result of heavy rainfall) a properly installed drainage system can help you to avoid bacteria growth and even insect infestations.
A paver patio is built on granular material that drains quite well. so there is no need for a drain under it. Even if the material under it becomes saturated, the patio surface will still shed water, and eventually the saturated material will still drain.
Without a decent sub base (type one) the patio will move in time. Soil is very unstable especially if it gets wet. We laid paving onto sand with blobs of mortar many years ago and after a few years it was a mess. You can save money on the paving, for example by using concrete slabs, but not the sub base.

Line the trench with landscape fabric and gravel. Then lay in 4-inch perforated drainpipe with the holes facing down.

It is important to make sure that the hardcore used is well compacted to provide a stable base for the paving. Sand blinding is a less common type of sub-base and is made up of a fine layer of sand.

Dig a depth of around 150mm across the whole area, making sure the soil is evenly compacted. Then tip in the sub-base, raking it into a consistent depth of 100mm. If you don't provide enough slope, rainwater will settle into low spots, eventually softening and washing out the sand and subbase materials beneath.
