Spin speeds can range from anywhere between 1000RPM (rotations per minute) to 1800RPM. The higher the RPM, the quicker your washing machine will remove water from your clothes. It can also help to reduce the amount of residual water left on thicker garments.
Clothes are much more likely to shrink when exposed to hot water or high dryer settings. Washing clothes in cold water goes a long way toward preserving the “off-the-rack” size. Avoiding heavy duty cycles, fast spins and high-heat drying can also prevent shrinkage.
The spin speed of a washing machine refers to the number of times the washing machine drum spins in one minute. The spin speeds in our range go up to a maximum of 1600rpm; this means that the drum spins 1600 times every minute.
One common misconception is that higher spin speeds will ruin your clothes. On the contrary, when used appropriately, high speeds can actually enhance cleaning efficiency while being safe for sturdy fabrics.

Delicate materials like linen and silk require gentle cycles, temperatures below 40°C, and a spin speed under 800 rpm. High Temperatures can shrink or or damage fabrics. Check the care labels and avoid settings over 40°C unless specified. High Spin Speeds (above 1200 rpm) can stress fibres, leading to wear and damage.
Through the research that we've done - we've found the difference between a 1200rpm and a 1600rpm machine is that the 1600rpm extracts about double the amount of water. Between 1600rpm and 1400rpm, there's about a 50% increase in the amount of water released.
Use higher speeds (1200-1400 RPM) for heavier items to reduce drying time, and lower speeds (600-800 RPM) for delicate items to prevent damage.
However, most washing machines are set to the standard 1200 rpm/1400 rpm, a speed which suits most washing loads. So you don't have to worry about the spin cycle speed for the majority of the time. However, you may want to change the speeds when washing delicate items or silk fabrics.
STEP 1: Consult the care guide on clothing tags
If your garment is missing the care tag, a good laundry tip to help prevent shrinking in general is to wash on cold, delicate cycles and dry with low or no heat.
3) Turn up the heat
Is there a universal rule for how to shrink your clothes? In a way, yes. Though every type of fabric behaves differently, heat will shrink most, if not all, fabric types. For example, both cotton shirts and denim jeans will shrink more in a warm or hot wash, followed by a high heat drying cycle.
In most scenarios, all you need is a container full of warm water with a capful of liquid detergent. Next, make sure to add in your clothes and stir them into the solution until they are completely soaked. Gently wring out the clothing to expel excess liquid and gently stretch the clothing back to its original size.
Consider Soil Levels: For heavily soiled items, a higher spin can help remove more water, while lightly soiled clothes can typically do well with a medium or low spin.
Shrinking often occurs when a garment is exposed to excessive heat, either in the washing cycle or while tumble drying. Your label's drying instructions will indicate whether the garment can go through a regular dry cycle, if it should be tumble-dried, or if it requires other care like drying flat or line-drying.
If you see anything over about 3,300 RPMs, that is likely too much spin for any consistent success with your driver. This isn't a perfect rule obviously — and it will vary depending on swing speed — but one of the main goals for most golfers should be to get driver spin near or under 3,000 RPMs.
As always, do check the manufacturer's instruction book or the wash care labels on individual garments for their own recommendations: Cottons: 1400 rpm. Delicates: 600 rpm. Woollens: 1200 rpm.
The normal RPM range for cars on highways is generally between 1500 rpm and 2000 rpm. The idle rotation ranges between 600 rpm and 1000 rpm. A diesel engine usually stays idle at around 750 rpm, while it runs at a speed of 110 km/h on 6th gear at 2000 rpm. However, petrol engines rotate at 6000 rpm at high speeds.
Washing: Jeans and jeans go hand in hand
Then it's best to put four pairs of jeans together in the washing machine - inside out, of course. The machine should not be too full to avoid severe wrinkles - a moderate spin speed of 800 or 1000 revolutions is also helpful for this.
Spinning too fast (1,200 to 1,600 rpm) or for too long tends to damage washing and can even cause items to shrink. Carefully read your appliance's instructions to ensure you fully understand the different programmes, and check the labels on your clothes to make sure you are using the right settings.
Put clothes on for an extra spin cycle
Your laundry will come out of the machine noticeably less wet and will consequently dry faster too.
As far as temperature is concerned, it is recommended to wash your towels between 40° and 60°C, not more. So make sure you keep to the correct water temperature so that our tips work as they should – your laundry will thank you! For spinning, we recommend towel washing at 1200 rpm and not at too high a temperature.
A 1400 RPM spin cycle is generally safe for sturdy fabrics like towels, jeans, and bedding. However, it may be too harsh for delicate materials, leading to fabric damage or excessive creasing. For delicate items, a lower spin speed is recommended.
Spin Cycles
This will remove the most amount of water possible without damaging your clothes. The spin speeds can be selected by using the control on the front of your machine, next to your programme dial.
A washing machine with 1200 RPM should work for you. The residual moisture percentage is 52% on average. Your clothes be a bit more wet, but they'll wear less quickly. Useful if you want to dry a brand new shirt.
