Don't use laundry detergent to clean the tub of your washer. Laundry detergent is for laundry and can build up a residue inside the hoses and other components of the washer; and over time it can provide a moist environment for mold and bacteria to grow.
Remove any clothing in the wash drum. Open the dispenser. Add liquid chlorine bleach, powder cleaner or tub cleaner. Don't add any laundry detergent or fabric softener when using TUB CLEAN.
If you have a suitable cleaning agent, use this washing machine drum cleaner with the drum cleaning program or Cottons 90 programme. Do not add any detergent while running a program to clean. Run a hot water cycle. Set your washing machine to the hottest temperature and the longest cycle, for example, Cottons 90.
Two common household ingredients are needed for this project. White vinegar and baking soda to the rescue! The vinegar will disinfect, helping kill mold and mildew. (1) The acidity of the vinegar will also help dissolve soap residue in the washtub and dissolve lime deposits in pipes (if you have hard water).
Add washing machine cleaner, white vinegar, or bleach to the detergent compartment. Press and hold the “Tub Clean” button for 3-5 seconds and then press “Start.” Leave the washing machine door open once the cycle is complete to let the drum dry.
Simply add per the cleaners directions*, close the lid and press "tub clean." Liquid bleach, lime scaler remover, tub cleaner, powdered cleaner, cleaner tablets etc. *Detailed instructions are on page 24 of the supplied manual.
DO clean the washing machine occasionally. Run a tub clean program, use a descaler for removing limescale deposits and clean the washing machine parts such as inlet filter, lint filter and door rubber gasket. DO keep your washing machine door and detergent tray open after a wash cycle.
Add 2 cups of white cleaning vinegar to detergent dispenser. Run the washer through a complete cycle. Run another cycle on the highest level and at the hottest water temperature, this time adding a 1/2 cup of baking soda to the drum. When the cycle is done, wipe inside drum of washer with a damp microfiber cloth.
Bathtubs
Dilute laundry detergent in water to make a tub-cleaning agent that will break down soap scum, which is a mix of soap and bio-based elements like sebum and dead skin, quickly and effectively.
Place the powder in a mesh bag directly in the drum to allow it to dissolve quicker.
In order to clean more effectively, you may need to use more powder detergent with hard water to counteract the minerals that can interfere with cleaning. Liquid detergents, on the other hand, are less reactive with hard water and can therefore be used at regular amounts.
For the best results, make sure you put the detergent and softener into the right sections of your detergent drawer. The powder detergent goes into the largest section of the drawer, usually on the left-hand side. If in any doubt, check your washing machine's manual.
If you notice that your washer smells more like a gym bag and less like the spring fresh meadow of your favorite laundry detergent, run this cycle once a week for three weeks. Otherwise, perform a tub clean cycle once a month or every 30 wash cycles.
You can clean the drum without a cleaning agent when you use the ECO DRUM CLEAN cycle. (DO NOT USE a common cleaning agent for the ECO DRUM CLEAN and ECO DRUM CLEAN+ function.)
FILL WASHER WITH HOT WATER
Be sure you have no clothing items in the drum and no detergent or fabric softeners in any trays.
The water temperature for Drum Clean+ is set to 70°C, which cannot be changed. Make sure the drum is empty. Do NOT use any cleaning agents or detergents for cleaning the drum. It can cause damage the drum of the washing machine - this applies to Tub Clean as well.
I recommend using non-ammonia based glass cleaners such as Windex, 409 or any similar product. Just make sure it doesn't contain ammonia! Ammonia can fade the coloring in your drums over time making them look flat and dull.

For a front-load washer, put 2 tablespoons of borax or oxygen bleach and 2 tablespoons of washing soda in the tub of the washing machine. For a top-loading machine, put 1/2 cup of each of the powders into the wash tub. Run at the hottest temperature or use the “clean tub” setting on the washer.
Soaking clothes overnight, whether inside a washing machine or out, is best avoided. Follow recommended guidelines when soaking clothes and using chemicals, and always remember that prolonged soaking can and will damage your clothes.
