Instead, mesh tape is self-adhesive, so you can apply it directly to the seams and then mud over it with hot mud. As with traditional mud, you want to apply each coat with a wider knife, feathering out each layer of mud to produce a smooth transition back to the drywall panel.
Even with the adhesive mesh tape, its not really a good idea to place it without mud down first. You want your tape inside of the mud, not just covered by it.
The chemicals in it react to heat and then within minutes it will dry and harden. So if you read the instructions on the mesh tape, it will tell you recommended to be used in combination with quick set mud. The problem with using premixed mud with mesh tape is that the joint CAN crack later.
The “first coat” consists of applying the mud-saturated tape to all of the joints and corner beads and filling screw or nail holes for the first time. Begin with the butt joints first, then the horizontal tapered joints, then the angles and finally, the corner beads.
After applying the first layer of mud under the tape, you can add one more thin coat of mud to get a smooth finish.
If you use mesh tape, setting compound (“Quick Set”) is the best drywall mud – actually, the only mud – to use. If you use paper tape and need lots of time to work, or you anticipate needing to do plenty of sanding (like beginners), pre-mixed mud is your best drywall mud.
While there are some big differences between the two types of drywall tape, each tape has its strengths. Mesh tape is great for quick repairs or to avoid mold remediation in the future. Paper tape creates a stronger bond, making it more resistant to cracking in the future.
All three coats can be applied in the same day; if the taper is skilled enough, only two coats are necessary (the compound can be applied more heavily, because there is very little shrinkage as it sets up). Proper temperature, humidity, and airflow help complete the taping process in one day.
Step 3: Texture
After taping and mudding the seams, the mud is then sanded down smooth to the panels. After that, it's time for texture.
When you skip taping, those seams become open invitations for moisture to seep in. This can lead to mold growth, warping, and, in severe cases, structural damage.
Overlapping fine mesh tape is one sure way that a crack will not come back on you!
Hot drywall mud, also referred to as "hot mud" or "quick-set joint compound," is distinct from regular joint compound primarily because of its accelerated drying time. While standard joint compounds can take up to 24 hours or more to dry, hot drywall mud sets much faster, typically within 20 to 45 minutes.
If you have smooth finishes on both the wall and ceiling the typical process is to use tape and joint compound. If you are using paper tape the process is to apply some joint compound first to bed the tape into and then apply another coat (or two or three) to get it smooth enough to sand it to the final finish.
Use water to thin the mud to the right consistency when applying it to the drywall. All-purpose joint compound or mud has bonding agents that cause the drywall tape to hold better.
You should do a little bit of sanding between adding coats of mud. Knock down any ridges or significantly imperfect areas through sanding, which should help you apply the next coat of mud smoothly. If your first coat of mud is pretty smooth after it dries, a quick sanding is all you'll need.
Mud consistency is soooo important!! If you are taping with really thick mud you'll have blisters, your tape won't wipe down well and it will be difficult to wipe it flat enough. Thin is better for sure!!
With any drywall angle, you want to apply at least 3 coats of drywall compound to each joint: 1 to apply the tape. 1 to fill the joint. 1 to finish it smooth.
Bottom line: generally, mesh tape beats paper tape for versatility of environment. It is more mold-resistant and better suited to wet areas. It can be a fine choice for high-traffic areas, especially if paired with corner bead.
The surface should be clean, dry and dust-free so the tape sticks properly. Lay tape onto the surface, pressing down as you go. Don't stretch the tape, or it may lift or break. Press tape down firmly with a smooth edge, like a putty knife or credit card.
