SURFACE PREPARATION Remove any peeling and/or unsound coatings. Sand any remaining paint film edges smooth with the surface. Remove existing stains by washing, sanding, scraping, etc.
Bin's is very sandable and should be sanded between coats. When you apply it, work fast, get it on as even as you can, but do not try to over work it. It flashes fast and trying to overbrush partially dried bin's will cause it to curl and drag. Shellac sands very easily and boo boos can be fixed, no problem.
Can you paint over Zinsser BIN Aqua? Yes, you can paint over Zinsser BIN Aqua with almost any type of paint. It makes the perfect base coat in many situations.
Do I need to sand back to bare timber? No, you just need to prepare and prime them with a high-quality undercoat. Zinsser Cover Stain uses an advanced oil-based formula which cuts drying time, covers most stains, and adheres to most surfaces.
You only need to sand if there are brush strokes or other blemishes. Also you don't need to sand between coats. I only sand if I have brush strokes or drips (I'm finally getting to the experience level where this rarely happens).
Can you paint over primer without sanding the car? Technically, yes, you can do that. Some circumstances don't require sanding the existing paint and primer before repainting. If you choose this route, the car's surface might show minimal damage like puncture holes, body scratches, dents, and cracks.
In most cases only one coat is necessary to prime most surfaces. If excessive absorption occurs over very porous substrates a second coat may be necessary.
Zinsser BIN is shellac-based, whereas 123 is water-based. This makes Zinsser Bullseye 123 a lot quicker and easier to apply. It's also better suited for use on bare wood, or to prime plastic and composite before painting. BIN may be harder to apply, but it is by far the better stain block.
Sanding is often a crucial step for ensuring that your surface is ready to be painted. If you don't have a properly sanded surface, paint may not adhere to certain items properly. You can oversand, undersand and often people underestimate its importance. But, you don't have to be a pro to sand a surface.
Dry Time– In most cases B-I-N® will dry to the touch in 20 minutes and can be recoated in 45 minutes. The dry primer film develops full adhesion after it cures in 1 to 3 days. Lower temperatures, higher humidity and the addition of tint will prolong dry and cure time.
Original Kilz Primer allowed more seep through when put in two coats to two different walls in the same area, whereas Zinsser provided superior coverage.
Zinsser BIN Primer is perfect for use on interior surfaces and spot priming of exterior surfaces. Recommended for application to interior ceilings, walls, doors, trim, cabinets, furniture, and related paintable surfaces. Exterior uses are limited to spot priming only.
Zinsser BIN primer is the original pigmented shellac stain-killing primer-sealer. It is great for knots, water stains, fire and smoke damage. It is ideal for interior new wood and dries in minutes; re-coat in 45 minutes. Seals in tough stains, pet, smoke and fire odours.
Also consider fossa Block & Bond as a direct alternative to Zinsser BIN, it's a bit nicer to use, and quite a bit cheaper: Zinsser BIN Primer Sealer and Stain Blocker seals surface pores so you use less finish paint.
Especially if you're springing for quality paint, I'd recommend going over the BIN with a layer of Kilz 2 or a similar good-quality latex primer to help your top coat stick better and maybe even require fewer coats.
Chalk paint is very popular for painting furniture and adheres to almost any surface without sanding. Another option would be a “furniture paint” (which I used on this cedar chest) sold at many home improvement stores. These “furniture paints” are good quality, thick paint that hardens into a durable coating.
In most cases, professional painters don't wash walls with a detergent solution to avoid damaging the drywall or trim. Instead, most professional painters lightly sand or “scuff” the walls with a pole sander using fine-grit sandpaper.
Can you paint over a primer without sanding? Yes, but you shouldn't. Skimp on the sanding results in a rough finish and paint blemishes. However, there're still some specially formulated epoxy primers are not meant to be sand.
Instead of sanding, use a liquid deglosser to dull the existing finish. This product helps you prepare the surface for new stain or paint without the need to strip or sand.
Can you use Zinsser without sanding? The beauty of many Zinsser primers, especially the Bulls Eye 1-2-3, is their excellent adhesion, eliminating the need for sanding even on glossy surfaces.
Zinsser Bulls Eye is a 'bond coat' primer that's great for hard-to-stick surfaces as it offers excellent adhesion without sanding. It dries to a smooth, tight, water-resistant film that is perfect for painting over with your chosen topcoat.
One coat, applied properly, is all you need. The two finish coats will even up the colors. BIN isn't specifically made to seal odors, it just happens to be great at it. Give it a scuff sand after application to knock down the garbage that may have been applied during priming.
Remove Zinsser® B-I-N® and most types of dried-on paint from brushes with ease using B-I-N® Brush Cleaner and Restorer. This product contains powerful detergents that break down paint for an ultra clean finish.
B-I-N® is the ultimate primer, sealer and stain killer. It offers unparalleled adhesion on any surface without sanding and has the hiding power to conceal the toughest of stains. Effectively blocks odours. Dries in minutes.
Zinsser Bin Shellac based primer is the best stain blocking primer available. BIN is great for blocking stains, odors and wood knots. While it is not a bonding primer, it does have strong adhesion.
