You should never run your dishwasher without the filter – it can lead to clogs in the drain that can cause issues.
"First, empty the dishwasher, then put one cup of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe bowl and place it on the top rack of the dishwasher," explains Poole. "Run the hottest cycle on the dishwasher. Skip the drying cycle and open the dishwasher door to let it air-dry." Make sure to skip the detergent during this cycle.
Many newer dishwashers have a removable filter, but some older ones don't (your appliance manual will tell you either way).
The filter not only helps make it possible to skip prerinsing your dishes, but it also filters the water and catches food particles as the machine washes. "While dishwasher tablets and pods tend to be more expensive, they invariably outperform powder in our dishwasher detergent tests," says Matthew. "The top 10 products in our dishwasher detergent review are all either tablets or pods. And the lowest-ranked products are all powders, sheets and gels."
Your Whirlpool's filter is located at the bottom of the dishwasher. You may notice everything from food particles to fruit stickers and even small pieces of glass covering the top of the filter in a mushy mess. If your filter can be removed, you should do so before trying to clean off the debris.

The dishwasher filter is at the bottom of your dishwasher, under the bottom rack. To find it, pull out the bottom dish rack, then look for the filter—it's usually either in one of the back corners of the dishwasher tub or around the base of the bottom spray arm.
Maintenance of your filters regularly will sustain peak cleaning performance. We suggest you clean both your upper and lower filters and rinse under running water at least once a month. IMPORTANT: To avoid damage to dishwasher, do not operate your dishwasher without filters properly installed.
