In testing, three to five blades seems to be the best compromise between balancing this hydraulic vibration resonance and allowing each blade to do as much work without disturbing the airflow for the succeeding fan blade. This does not mean you won't find an even number or more than 3-5.
A 4-bladed fan, on the other hand, will provide higher air delivery due to a greater number of blades but at a lower speed due to the aerodynamic drag. 4-blade fans may also increase the motor load. Such fans are ideal options for colder countries where fans are not required to run at higher speeds.
Five-blade fans can often push more air than a three-blade fan due to the fact that they have a larger total surface area of blades. The larger the surface area of the blades, the more sweeping area the fan has. However, if a three-blade fan had larger blades than a five-blade fan, it would be able to move more air.
Increased grip: With more blades to create a larger surface area, 4-blade props can provide a better grip in the water, particularly in choppy or rough conditions. Reduced noise and vibration: The additional blade of a 4-blade propeller can help to reduce noise and vibration, leading to a smoother, quieter ride.
A steeper pitch means the blades can push more air, leading to better airflow. For example, a fan with a blade pitch of 15 degrees will generally move more air than one with a 10-degree pitch. Imagine a paddle boat - a steeper paddle angle moves more water, propelling the boat faster.
The choice between a 3-blade and a 5-blade pedestal fan ultimately depends on your specific needs: For powerful airflow and larger spaces, a 3-blade fan is your best option. For quiet operation and modern aesthetics, go for a 5-blade fan.
Both can be energy-efficient options. While 5 blades might seem like they'd distribute air more evenly, a well-designed 3-blade fan with a powerful motor can achieve sufficient air circulation throughout a room. Blade pitch (the angle of the blades) also plays a significant role in air distribution.
The highest-efficiency centrifugal fans use airfoil or backward-curved impeller blades (figure 2). Airfoil blades are curved backward and have an airfoil shape (similar to a cross section of an airplane wing), while backward-curved blades are of a single thickness of metal.
Tower fans are ideal for smaller to medium-sized rooms due to their vertical airflow and space-saving design. Whereas, pedestal fans are well suited for larger rooms, as their adjustable height and horizontal oscillation provide effective cooling across a broader area.
However, the number of blades has little or no impact on the amount of air a ceiling fan can move. It's more about the aesthetics than the airflow. This is because of the recent innovations in fan design, motor, etc. that you might not be able to notice a major difference between 3 or 5 bladed fans.
As such, the 5-blade design is often preferred in settings where noise reduction is a priority. While 5-blade fans may be quieter, they are not always more efficient. The additional blades can create more drag, reducing the overall efficiency.
ENERGY STAR® makes the following recommendations for ceiling fan diameter: Small Rooms up to 100 square feet = 29 to 36 inches. Large Rooms up to 400 square feet = 36 to 50 inches. Great Rooms over 400 square feet = 50 to 71 inches.
4-blade ceiling fans are less noisy and are useful in rooms with an air conditioner, to move the cool air around. They are often more stylish looking. However, 4 blade fans may move air slower than a 3 blade fan and can be more expensive than 3 blade ceiling fans.

Since 4-blade props are more powerful and more forgiving, they can absorb more vibrations than a 3-blade option can.
Because the blades are closer together, ceiling fans with four, five or six blades can create a steadier airflow and cool a room faster.
The single blade catches fewer beard hairs, resulting in fewer ingrown hair and less irritation for a clean shave. On the other hand, multi-blade razors with more than two blades pivot, causing more friction and cutting hair below the skin's surface, leading to more hair follicle irritation.

The wider or longer the fan blade, the more airflow it's able to generate. However, it also creates drag or resistance. As the blade slices through the air, an opposite force called drag slows down this motion.
Each ceiling fan comes with an Energy Information label (see below) which measures airflow in CFM. The higher the CFM, the more powerful the fan. Your average fan is around 4,000 - 5,000 CFM at high speed.
