Mr. Clean Magic Erasers are a household staple for removing stains, grime, and build-up. So how does a Magic Eraser work? They make these magic sponges from melamine foam—a versatile and safe cleaning material that can get rid of everything from permanent marker stains to scuff marks.
Melamine foam is a porous material, which acts something like very fine sandpaper to gently remove stains. Though it feels soft on the outside, each eraser is actually uniquely abrasive and uses small air pockets in the material to lift stains when damp.
This might blow your mind but Mr. Clean Magic Erasers and generic melamine foam don't have a chemical cleaner or soap inside them, it's literally just an abrasive foam that makes them work.
Clean sells a line called Magic Erasers, and Scotch-Brite offers a product called the Easy Erasing Pad. The secret behind these types of erasers is a material commonly called melamine foam. With just a little water, melamine foam can dig in and destroy stains that other products can't touch.
First, soak the stained fabric in cold water for at least 30 minutes. Mix 1 tablespoon of liquid laundry detergent with enzymes with 1 cup of water. Add 1/4 teaspoon of white vinegar and stir. Use a Dobie All Purpose Cleaning Pad to apply the detergent-vinegar mixture to your unidentified stain.
STEP FOUR: RINSE AND RETIRE.
Before you retire to the couch, rinse out your Magic Eraser and give your newly freshened surfaces a water wipe down, too. If what you cleaned will come in contact with food, you'll need to wipe it with a wet rag or paper towel, so it will be ready for the next time you meet again.
Similar to the sofa trick, cover the area you want to clean with shaving foam, massaging it in, and leave it for up to an hour. Wipe it off with a damp cloth or use a toothbrush to scrub at more ingrained marks. Repeat if necessary and leave it to air dry. This is also great for any spills and stains.
Baking soda is a fantastic cleaning treatment when you're learning how to clean a smelly couch. It removes and prevents odors as well as removes most stains. Use dry baking soda by sprinkling it all over your couch to absorb odors or sprinkle it on a stain to help loosen it.
"These cleaning sponges also contain chemicals that would be irritating to the stomach." "If you're intentionally using the Magic Eraser for teeth whitening, you'd be at risk for irritating your mouth, teeth and gumline. It really should be avoided," she cautions.
Magic Erasers will clean just about anything, but if you. need a little more oomph, soak that sucker in white. vinegar.
Magic Erasers are made up of a melamine foam, which has undergone heat compression to increase their durability, explains Brashear, who says that this is the extent of their manipulation.
For fabric upholstery: Mix 1/4 cup vinegar, 3/4 warm water and 1 tablespoon of dish soap or Castile soap. Put in a spray bottle. Mist the soiled area. Scrub with a soft cloth until the stain lifts.
Add 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar to 4 cups warm water and pour into a spray bottle. After vacuuming the surface, spray the cushions with the solution and let sit for 15 minutes. Use a soft brush to scrub any stained areas. Rinse with water and let air dry.
You may also find that as you use a magic eraser that it leaves behind a white residue on the surface you are cleaning. However, this white substance is harmless and can be removed easily by rinsing it away with water, or wiping the area with a damp cloth.
It has a blue absorbent layer on one side, which is used to wipe up things like a normal sponge. If you've never used a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, it's very simple to use. Just wet it like a sponge, squeeze out the excess water, and wipe away dirt and grime.
